100 freestyle mark falls at trials

Jason Lezak has set an American record of 47.58 seconds in the 100-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic trials.
Lezak, a 32-year-old from Irvine, Calif., won his preliminary heat Wednesday in a record-setting 48.15 seconds, bettering his old mark of 48.17.
In the next heat, Garrett Weber-Gale went even lower, touching in 47.78.
But swimming in a semifinal heat Wednesday night, Lezak broke Weber-Gale's record. Lezak was just off the world record of 47.50, established in March by France's Alain Bernard.
In the women's competition, Katie Hoff has locked up her third Olympic race, setting an American record while winning the 200-meter freestyle. Hoff won the freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 55.88 seconds. She broke her own American mark of 1:56.08, set in February.
NHL: Penguins sign Malkin
• Evgeni Malkin signed a five-year, $43.5 million extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins, a deal that will keep him under contract until the 2013-14 season.
• Marian Hossa, a high-scoring winger with the Penguins, has agreed to sign with the Detroit Red Wings. Hossa's one-year contract is believed to be worth $7.45 million.
• The Columbus Blue Jackets traded enigmatic offensive star Nikolai Zherdev and center Dan Fritsche to the New York Rangers for defensemen Christian Backman and Fedor Tyutin.
• The Blue Jackets have signed Kristian Huselius to a four-year, $19-million contract.
• The Dallas Stars signed Sean Avery to a four-year, $15.5 million deal.
• The Ottawa Senators signed veteran forwards Shean Donovan and Jarkko Ruutu.
• The Carolina Hurricanes signed former Penguins defenseman Josef Melichar, 29, to a one-year, $1 million deal.
• The Boston Bruins re-signed forward Petteri Nokelainen to a multiyear contract.
• The Tampa Bay Lightning re-signed restricted free agent Ryan Craig to a two-year, $1.575 million contract.
• The Colorado Avalanche re-signed restricted free-agent forward Wojtek Wolski to a two-year contract.
• The Vancouver Canucks signed St. Louis Blues center Ryan Johnson to a two-year, $2.2 million contract, and re-signed backup goalie Curtis Sanford.
• The Calgary Flames signed former Edmonton Oilers forward Curtis Glencross and brothers Jim and Peter Vandermeer.
• The Atlanta Thrashers signed free-agent defenseman Ron Hainsey.
• The Minnesota Wild re-signed injured defenseman Kurtis Foster to a one-year, $1.025 million contract.
Colleges: Times set for OSU games
• Ohio State's first three home games this fall will kickoff at noon. The Big Ten Network announced that it would telecast the Buckeyes' games at home against Youngstown State on Aug. 30 and Troy on Sept. 20 and that both would start at noon. ESPN or ESPN2 will carry the Sept. 6 game at Ohio Stadium against Ohio University. The Buckeyes are scheduled to play at Southern California on Sept. 13 at 8 p.m. That game will be shown nationally by ABC. The only other game times that have been announced are 8 p.m. on Oct. 4 at Wisconsin and at home against Penn State on Oct. 25.
• Tennessee signed football coach Phillip Fulmer and basketball coach Bruce Pearl to new deals that will keep them with the Volunteers through 2014. Fulmer's deal is worth an average of nearly $3 million for the next seven seasons. Pearl was previously signed through 2013 and made $1.3 million last season. His new deal increases his salary to an average $2.3 million a year.
• Indiana University will give up two basketball scholarships for the upcoming season in anticipation of penalties related to the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate, assistant athletic director Frank Cuervo confirmed.
NBA: Sonics, Seattle settle
• Seattle SuperSonics owner Clay Bennett could end up paying $75 million to move the NBA franchise to Oklahoma City this year, and he won't be taking the team's name or colors with him. Bennett agreed to settle a lawsuit with the city of Seattle, bringing an end to a contentious relationship that resulted in a trial in which the judge was due to issue her ruling Wednesday. Bennett announced that the settlement calls for a payment of $45 million immediately, and would include another $30 million paid to Seattle in 2013 unless the state Legislature in Washington authorizes at least $75 million in public funding to renovate KeyArena by the end of 2009 or Seattle obtains an NBA franchise of its own within the next five years.
• Boston Celtics center Kendrick Perkins has undergone surgery on his left shoulder. No timetable has been set for Perkins' return to the Celtics.
Other: Bears sign second pick
• The Chicago Bears agreed to a four-year deal with second-round draft pick Matt Forte.
• Lindsay Tarpley, Carli Lloyd, Angela Hucle and Abby Wambach scored, and the United States beat Norway 4-0 in tuneup for the Olympic women's soccer tournament in Fredrikstad, Norway.
