MINNEAPOLIS: General Manager Mark Shapiro does not anticipate a full-scale rebuilding program for the Indians.
''I believe if guys hadn't gotten hurt — even with the offense struggling and the disappointing bullpen — we would still be in the hunt, though maybe not in first place,'' he said. ''Next year, I think we will be contenders, as well.''
Shapiro expects to alter the roster between now and April, but he does not believe improving the team's win-loss record rests primarily on acquiring outsiders.
''The most important thing is to get back our injured players,'' he said. ''Having those players return is bigger than anything we can do externally.''
He is talking about starters Fausto Carmona and Jake Westbrook, plus catcher Victor Martinez and DH Travis Hafner. All but Westbrook are expected to play this season.
NOT MUCH TO SAY — Shapiro had little to say on the status of C.C. Sabathia, a prospective free agent who stands a good chance of being traded this month.
''We feel very strongly about C.C. and feel fortunate that he goes out and pitches for us every five days,'' Shapiro said.
The latest trade rumor has Sabathia being sent to the Milwaukee Brewers.
LAST CHANCE? — Keeping Andy Marte on the roster was a priority when the Tribe broke camp in March, but his stock seems to have fallen precipitously.
Asked about Marte's future with the club, Shapiro said, ''I would like to see him get some regular at-bats the rest of the season, but if he doesn't, he probably doesn't factor into next year.''
NEW SIGNEE — The Indians signed right-handed reliever Preston Larrison, who had an opt-out clause in his minor-league deal with the Detroit Tigers.
Larrison, the Tigers' second-round pick in 2001, was 2-2 with a 3.31 ERA in 29 games at Triple-A Toledo. He has been assigned to Buffalo.
FARM FACTS — Josh Tomlin (6-4, 3.41 ERA) gave up three runs (two earned) in 61/3 innings, as Kinston lost 3-2 to Wilmington. . . . Abner Abreu homered, tripled and doubled, but the Gulf Coast League Indians lost 11-6 to the Phillies.
