Saturday evening at Firestone Stadium could best be classified as almost perfect for the Akron Racers softball team.
The two main reasons such a statement could be made were: the Racers gave a $3,000 check to the Akron General Medical Center to help fight breast cancer and then defeated first-place Philadelphia 3-2 with an extra-inning walk-off victory in the eighth inning.
Racers' Kate Robinson tied the score 2-2 with a solo home run in the sixth inning and then ended the game with a sacrifice that scored Jherica Williams.
A crowd of 1,226 fans erupted from their seats and then enjoyed post-game fireworks and an autograph session for kids.
''This is why we play every night,'' Robinson said. ''Close games are always the most exciting. It was one of those games where you knew we'd have a big finish in the end.''
Kristen Butler started the Racers (11-9) eighth inning with a double. Williams then pinch ran for Butler.
''Today was a great night,'' Butler said. ''We came out here for a good cause. Not only are we supporting our league, but we are supporting breast cancer [research]. It is a very important issue for everyone. All of our sponsors pitched in for us and allowed us to wear different [pink apparel and equipment].''
Racers' Kellie Middleton scored in the third following a Susan Ogden sacrifice fly to cut the Force (14-6) lead to 2-1.
Racers pitcher Angela Tincher (7-2) threw a complete game, struck out seven and was aided by tremendous diving catches by Middleton and Kim Hamilton in the outfield.
''There was a lot going on tonight, a lot of things for us to be excited about,'' Tincher said.
