Pa. police chief is NFL security boss

Signal-stealing probes part of job

The NFL hired Pennsylvania's state police chief for a new position that will cover all aspects of stadium security from fan behavior to signal stealing.

But Col. Jeffrey Miller, who begins work as director of strategic security Aug. 18, said Tuesday there was far more to the job than ensuring no repeat of the episode last year involving the New England Patriots.

''I think it's safe to say that the league is obviously sensitive to any issue which could affect the integrity of the product that they put out on the field,'' Miller said. ''Obviously, I wasn't in the room when they worked this all out, but it is a new security director position and it's going to cross over a number of different areas.''

Those areas will include overseeing pregame security screening, initiated by the league after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, as well as fan behavior, an area commissioner Roger Goodell stressed last spring at the annual league meeting.

NBA: Traylor on Cavs summer team

• Former Cavalier Robert ''Tractor'' Traylor was named to Cleveland's 13-member summer-league roster. The team is made up of young players like rookies J.J. Hickson and Darnell Jackson. LeBron James' high school teammates and former University of Akron stars Dru Joyce and Romeo Travis also are on the roster. The team will play five games in Las Vegas beginning Monday against the New York Knicks.

• The Golden State Warriors will sign high-scoring free agent Corey Maggette to a five-year contract worth around $50 million, a person with knowledge of the deal told the Associated Press on Tuesday. Maggette, a 6-foot-6 swingman from Duke, should fit splendidly into Golden State coach Don Nelson's pell-mell style of play. He averaged 22.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists last season. Maggette will trade places on the California coast with Baron Davis, who spurned the Warriors last week to agree to terms with the Clippers.

• The 76ers have agreed to trade forward Rodney Carney and a future No. 1 pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a deal that clears salary-cap space for Philadelphia to make a stronger push for free agents.

• The Sacramento Kings signed first-round pick Jason Thompson, a forward-center.

• The Toronto Raptors signed guard Hassan Adams to a two-year deal.

NHL: Teams sign free agents

• The Tampa Bay Lightning signed free agent forward Mark Recchi to a one-year contract. He played for Atlanta and Pittsburgh last season.

• Center Brendan Morrison, who has had 50-plus points in six of the past seven NHL seasons, signed a one-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks.

• The Ottawa Senators signed free agent defenseman Jason Smith to a two-year $5.2 million contract.

• The Montreal Canadiens re-signed goaltender Jaroslav Halak to a two-year $1.55 million contract.

Other: Police close Pavlik investigation

• Boardman police have closed an investigation without making an arrest into middleweight boxing champion Kelly Pavlik's complaint that a former sponsor threatened to shoot his hands so he couldn't fight again.

• Florida State's inexperienced offensive line took a hit when it was announced that projected starting offensive guard Evan Bellamy, 19, will miss the 2008 football season because of a blood clot in his lower left leg.

• Wimbledon semifinalist Marat Safin rebounded from an early 3-0 deficit to beat Marc Lopez of Spain 7-6 (6), 7-5 in the first round of the clay-court Swedish Open tennis tourney in Bastad.

• The Alaska Dream, which will play in Anchorage, is the newest American Basketball Association team, a 46-team league.

The NFL hired Pennsylvania's state police chief for a new position that will cover all aspects of stadium security from fan behavior to signal stealing.
