CALENDAR
• July 18-20 — Master coach Bernie Pellerite will debut ''The School of Advanced Archery and Instructor Certification'' at The Marksman, 3017 Barber Road in Norton. The weekend classes feature curriculum used in the past NFAA Shooter's Schools. The three-day class is $375 per person and $25 for the instructor's certification. Classes are 3 to 9 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Registration required. Information: 330-745-2000.
• July 18 — Portage Lakes State Park will host a full-moon canoe outing beginning at 8:30 p.m. Space is limited. Registration is required. Information: 330-644-2220.
• July 19-20 — The Piedmont Lake Catfish Tournament begins at 7 p.m. at the marina. The open tournament is from 8 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday. The entry fee for the two-person event is $35 per team. The main tournament is for channel catfish only with a six-fish limit. An optional flathead pot is available for $5 per team. There is a 100-percent payout to top three teams. Weigh-in begins at 8 a.m. Sunday morning. Lake Milton Fish & Game Club, 4374 Bedell Road, Berlin Center, will host the event. The goal is to introduce youngsters to the fun and excitement of shooting and outdoor activities in a supervised, safe, positive and educational environment. Children are rotated in small groups through the following stations: .22 rifle shooting, air rifle shooting, archery, fishing, muzzleloader shooting, trap shooting, canoeing and wildlife displays. • July 31 — Hunters wanting to participate in Ohio's fall controlled deer and waterfowl hunts have until July 31 to submit permit applications for a random drawing. Hunters can submit their applications online at http://www.wildohio.com. The online fee is $3 per hunt. Mail-in applications are $5 per hunt. Fees are non-refundable. These special hunts are held each fall on selected public-use areas to provide additional hunting opportunities.

Ranges are open to the public for a fee of $3 per night to cover cost of targets. Events offered include basic pistol, self-defense shooting, light rifle shooting and sport hunting practice shoots. Shooters must provide their own firearms, ammunition and safety equipment. Shooters can qualify for NRA marksmanship awards. Club members, including some NRA pistol instructors, will be on hand to assist shooters. Contact: Bruce Knodel, 330-872-0674.
