Phillies 5, Aeros 3 — Host Reading took the lead with a three-run second inning and never looked back, beating the Aeros in an Eastern League game Sunday afternoon.
In his first start since rejoining the Aeros after a month's absence, left-hander Chuck Lofgren struggled with his command, and took the loss to fall to 1-4 with a 5.98 ERA.
Lofgren allowed four runs in just 22/3 innings, including a two-run home run to Kevin Nelson that highlighted the Phillies' (38-55) big second inning.
After reliever Jim Deters came on in the third to help the Aeros (60-34) get out of Lofgren's bases-loaded jam, left-hander Reid Santos gave up a solo home run to Clay Harris for an eighth-inning insurance run.
Left fielder Bronson Sardinha and center fielder Nate Panther each had two hits for the Aeros, and first baseman Matt Whitney went 1-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs with a two-run homer in the Aeros' three-run fourth inning.
The Aeros wrap up their four-game series at Reading today with a 12:05 p.m. matinee before the two-day All-Star break. They return home Thursday to begin a four-game series against the Erie SeaWolves (Detroit Tigers) at Canal Park.
NOTEBOOK — In Sunday's Future's Game, new Aeros left fielder Matt LaPorta started at first base and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout. Third baseman Wes Hodges did not start, but ended up going 1-for-2 with a double.
• Hector Rondon, a right-handed pitcher for the Indians playing at high Class-A Kinston, pitched a scoreless inning to help the World Team shut out the U.S. Team 3-0.
