MLB results - July 21

Sunday's American League results

Angels 5, Red Sox 3 — Casey Kotchman hit a two-run double to cap a three-run rally in the eighth inning, and the host Los Angeles Angels beat Boston for their fifth straight victory. With another late comeback, the Angels completed their first three-game sweep of Boston in seven years. The Angels became the first team in the majors to win 60 games, and the victory was their fifth in six meetings with Boston, enabling them to clinch their first season series against the Red Sox since 2001.

Yankees 2, Athletics 1 — Andy Pettitte outpitched Oakland All-Star Justin Duchscherer, getting just enough run support from Jason Giambi's homer and a sacrifice fly by Alex Rodriguez to help the host New York Yankees.

Tigers 5, Orioles 1 — Justin Verlander came an out short of completing a three-hitter, Magglio Ordonez and Marcus Thames hit solo homers, and Detroit handed host Baltimore its 15th consecutive Sunday loss.

Rangers 1, Twins 0 — Taylor Teagarden broke up Scott Baker's perfect-game bid with a sixth-inning home run for his first career hit, and Vicente Padilla pitched Texas past host Minnesota. The Rangers denied the Twins their fourth series sweep over the past month, handing them just their eighth defeat in the last 31 games. Baker (6-3) took a hard-luck loss, his first in six starts.

Blue Jays 9, Rays 4 — Alex Rios and Marco Scutaro homered and visiting Toronto avoided a three-game sweep with a victory over AL East-leading Tampa.

Royals 8, White Sox 7 — Esteban German hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the eighth inning to lead Kansas City over the host Chicago White Sox. German was 3-for-3 with two RBI and Mike Aviles had three hits for the Royals, who have won five of their last seven games.

Sunday's National League results

Marlins 3, Phillies 2 — Jorge Cantu hit a bases-loaded single off the scoreboard with none out in the 11th inning, and host Florida tightened the NL East race by beating Philadelphia. Alfredo Amezaga led off the 11th with a single against Clay Condrey (2-2), and Hanley Ramirez walked on a 3-2 pitch. Jeremy Hermida bunted to Condrey, who looked to third base before throwing late to first, and the infield single loaded the bases. Cantu singled on a 1-1 pitch and was mobbed by his teammates.

Mets 7, Reds 5 — Third baseman Edwin Encarnacion hit one of Cincinnati's three homers off Mike Pelfrey, then made a throwing error in the 10th inning that helped the visiting New York Mets rally for a victory. The Mets have won 11 of their last 13 games, salvaging their season one month after they fired manager Willie Randolph. The latest victory left them in a first-place tie with Philadelphia in the NL East heading into their three-game series at Shea Stadium that starts Tuesday.

Brewers 7, Giants 4 — Ryan Braun hit a three-run homer and drove in a career-high five runs, pitcher Manny Parra had an RBI single en route to winning his eighth straight decision and Milwaukee completed a season sweep of host San Francisco.

Dodgers 6, Diamondbacks 5 — Andre Ethier hit a go-ahead triple to highlight a five-run, ninth-inning rally and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat host Arizona. The Dodgers took two out of three from Arizona to pull even with the Diamondbacks in the NL West.

Cubs 9, Astros 0 — Ryan Dempster struck out seven in eight shutout innings to earn his first road win in two years, and the Chicago Cubs snapped a three-game losing streak with a win in Houston.

Nationals 15, Braves 6 — Washington's Willie Harris drove in five runs and reached base five times, Jesus Flores had four hits and Austin Kearns hit a two-run homer as the Nationals routed host Atlanta.

Rockies 11, Pirates 3 — Matt Holliday and Jeff Baker homered and had three hits each, Aaron Cook won his team-leading 12th game and host Colorado completed a four-game sweep of Pittsburgh.

Cardinals 9, Padres 5 — Aaron Miles' grand slam in the ninth inning, the first game-ending hit of his career, helped host St. Louis recover from another blown save by Jason Isringhausen in a victory over San Diego.
