Ravens' QB fight a friendly affair

Boller, Smith, Flacco to seek starting job at Baltimore camp

Associated Press

All three Baltimore Ravens quarterbacks seem to like each other, which makes for a friendly competition in their bid to claim the starting job.

On the first day of training camp Tuesday, Kyle Boller, Troy Smith and Joe Flacco spoke about working together to make the Ravens better.

Boller has the experience. Smith earned a reputation as a winner at Ohio State and owns a Heisman Trophy. Flacco has never played in an NFL game, but was labeled the team's ''quarterback of the future'' by General Manager Ozzie Newsome on draft day.

''This is too challenging of an offense to be thinking only of yourself,'' Smith said. ''It has to be about team.''

Colts coach upbeat

Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy is certain Peyton Manning's left knee will be ready for the Colts' season-opener. In fact, he thinks Manning might even play during the preseason.

On Tuesday, Dungy said he was optimistic the Colts' biggest question heading into training camp — Manning's valuable knee — could be resolved quicker than most people expect. Manning had surgery last week to remove an infected bursa sac, a procedure doctors said would require four to six weeks to heal.

Orlando Pace on mend

Seven-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Orlando Pace is close to returning from a shoulder injury, but will begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list.

Rams coach Scott Linehan said Tuesday the team would be conservative with Pace, the former Ohio State star who tore the labrum and rotator cuff in his right shoulder in the 2007 season-opener against Carolina.

Urlacher gets deal

The Chicago Bears and linebacker Brian Urlacher have agreed to a contract extension through 2012.

The extension reportedly is worth $18 million, including a $6 million signing bonus. Urlacher, 30, entering his ninth season, signed a nine-year, $57 million contract in 2003 that would have expired after 2011.

Last season, Urlacher played with an arthritic back condition and also had minor offseason neck surgery. Urlacher has been selected for the Pro Bowl six times.

Raiders sign safety

The Oakland Raiders agreed to terms on a one-year contract with former Kansas City Chiefs safety Greg Wesley on Tuesday.

Wesley, a third-round pick out of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in 2000, was released last week by the Chiefs. He was a starter for his first seven seasons before being relegated to a backup role last season.

Patriot pleads guilty

New England Patriots offensive lineman Nick Kaczur pleaded guilty Tuesday in Whitestown, N.Y., to speeding in a deal with prosecutors that will put a misdemeanor drug possession charge on hold.

Kaczur, 28, was ordered to pay $355 in fines and fees. The drug possession charge will be dismissed if he stays out of trouble for six months.

Police said Kaczur had 202 OxyContin pills labeled as made in Canada when he was pulled over April 27 by state troopers near Utica, N.Y.

Chargers keep Castillo

San Diego Chargers defensive end Luis Castillo has agreed to a five-year contract extension through 2014 valued at more than $43 million.

The deal will pay Castillo a guaranteed $17.5 million in signing and roster bonuses. Castillo's contract had been due to expire after 2009.
