AKRON: It was a pleasant surprise for recent Buchtel graduate Terence Somerville when he learned Wednesday morning that he was named to the 2008 USA Today All-USA Track and Field Team.
The newspaper selected 10 athletes in five categories: Sprints: (100, 200 and 400); Distances: (800 through the two-mile); Hurdles: (110, 300 and 400); Jumps: (high jump, long jump, triple jump and pole vault) and Throws: (Shot put, discus, hammer and javelin.)
''I know that they publish a team every year like they do for football and basketball,'' Buchtel coach John Scott said. ''I was reading the paper this morning and I saw it and thought, 'Doggone, there's Terence's name.' ''
According to USA Today, selections were made by Track and Field high school editor Jack Shepard and criteria included ranking on USA Today and Track and Field News national lists, the number of top performances and head-to-head competition in the regular season and major postseason meets.
Somerville was the No. 8 ranked hurdler in the nation and he's the first Buchtel athlete, as far as Scott knows, who has been selected for the prestigious national honor.
This past season, Somerville was the Division I state champ in the 110 hurdles and has accepted an athletic scholarship from the University of Cincinnati.
''I didn't even know until coach Scott called me about 8 o'clock this morning,'' Somerville said about the good news. ''I went on the Internet to look for the article, and there it was. I was completely shocked.''
Somerville was asked how special of a feeling it was knowing he was considered one of the best high school athletes in the nation in his event, and his answer said it all.
He paused for a few seconds, then replied, ''I'm blessed.''

Revere school board sanctions lacrosse
BATH TWP.: Lacrosse, which has been a club sport in the Revere school district for the past several years, has been sanctioned as an official high school sport.
The school board's action Tuesday also approved a three-year implementation timeline for the sport, including transportation to games and the services of a team athletic trainer in the fall. By the 2009 school year, the athletic director will handle scheduling and the district will assume the costs for the matches.
By 2010, the district will pay for equipment and coaching.
