The U17 Everest Soccer Club won its opening match at the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships in Little Rock, Ark.
Everest, making its first trip to the national championships and the first appearance by a Northeast Ohio team since 1999, topped the FC Delco Hammerheads of Pennsylvania 4-2 on Wednesday night.
Evan McCreary and Jamie Dollar scored early in the second half to break a 1-1 tie. Everest also got goals from Stephen Grater late in the first half and from Mark Connell late in the second half.
The Hammerheads are making their third consecutive trip to the national championship.
Everest was scheduled to play Andromeda 91 of Texas on Thursday night, then Diablo FC of California tonight. Andromeda beat Diablo 2-1 on Wednesday.
The championship, at 8 a.m. Sunday, will pit the two top teams after round-robin play.
ESPN to announce 'TitleTown' winner
The live televised announcement of the ''TitleTown USA'' winner on ESPN's SportsCenter has been moved to 6 p.m. Monday.
Massillon is among the 20 finalist cities.
Fan voting to determine the winning community began Wednesday and will conclude Sunday. ESPN originally scheduled the announcement of the winner for Sunday night.
''This change gives us more time to put in place additional production elements that will conclude 'TitleTown USA' on SportsCenter in a manner befitting the tremendous response and fan-engagement the program has generated,'' ESPN said in a statement.
Fans can vote at http://www.ESPN.com.
Junior national team assistants selected
St. Ignatius football coach Chuck Kyle, who will direct the U.S. junior national team in an international tournament next summer in Canton, selected his top assistants Thursday.
Steve Specht, varsity coach at Cincinnati St. Xavier, will be Team USA's defensive coordinator. Gary Swenson, varsity coach at Valley High School in West Des Moines, Iowa, will be the offensive coordinator.
Specht has led the Bombers to a 51-3 record and two Division I titles since taking over the program in 2003. Swenson, a varsity coach in Iowa since 1976, owns a career record of 252-85 (.748) and has led the Tigers to three state championships — all in the past six seasons.
Team USA will compete with seven other teams from four continents in the 2009 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Junior World Championship. The tournament will take place June 27-July 5, 2009, at Fawcett Stadium.
