Crennel commends quarterback for moving forward, working hard

BEREA: As should be expected given the Cleveland Browns opened training camp just a week ago, not everything is running smoothly.
Quarterback Brady Quinn started to pick things up Tuesday with a strike to Josh Cribbs that turned into an impressive score during the two-minute drill, and with a couple of nice out patterns thrown Wednesday.
Coach Romeo Crennel said he knows that Quinn is aware of it, but commended the second-year signal caller for moving forward.
''I think he's having fun. Sometimes he tries to make plays down the field, when in a different situation he might make a different choice,'' Crennel said. ''I know that he works hard. Things are going to smooth out for him and things will be less erratic for him, so to speak. Last year, he would just take what the defense gave him. I think he has better command of the offense, and he's trying to anticipate when he can make a play down the field.''
Zebras roam
The Browns brought in game officials for the first time this season for Wednesday morning and afternoon practices as a way to help show players how to play the game properly.
''We asked them not to drop flags. If they see a guy do something, they talk to them and say, 'Look, you did this and that's going to be a penalty,' so we were able to reinforce the proper way to play the game.''
Friday night lights
The Browns will practice at 7 p.m. Friday at Cleveland Browns Stadium, something that may be more useful this season than in the past given that the team will play five games this year that will start at 8 p.m. or later.
''To get out under the lights and put us in the stadium, try to get the atmosphere back a little bit, guys can get used to catching balls under the lights, fielding punts,'' Crennel said.
''The change in the routine is good. We play at night in the preseason so the practice at night will be good. It's sort of like a controlled scrimmage. We're not going to tackle and we will work some in the red zone and two-minute situation and go through our pregame procedures. And on Thursday when the Jets come into town, we'll look like we know what we're doing.''
Tickets for what the team is billing as Family Night are $5 and are available through area Ticketmasters, the stadium box office or by calling 216-241-5555. Proceeds will benefit the Cleveland Browns Foundation.
Giveaways and face painting will begin at 4:30 p.m. outside on the Tailgate Terrace along the south and east sides.
Brownies
It would seem that Crennel is making a concerted effort to keep his troops fresh. Wide receiver Braylon Edwards sat out the afternoon practice. A downpour erupted during part of morning practice, yet Crennel decided against taking the team indoors to finish it.
''We learned how to play with our feet under us,'' Crennel said. ''It felt good.''
