Harness racing
Dewey gains 15th victory while ahead by half-length

By Matt Hladik
Special to the Beacon Journal

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.: Undefeated Deweycheatumnhowe, the overwhelming 2-5 favorite, added to his resume Saturday, recording a lifetime best 1:52 gate-to-wire victory in the $1.5 million Hambletonian at the Meadowlands Racetrack.

With the half-length victory over 7-2 second choice Crazed, Dewey won his 15th overall start and 11th at the Meadowlands and became the first undefeated champion in the 83-year history of the Hambletonian.

''I guess he (Dewey) showed why he got 14 in a row and now 15. He's one hell of a horse.'' said driver Ray Schnittker, who co-owns and trains the colt. Make it Happen, another Schnittker trainee, was third.

Crazed, driven by the 2007 Driver of the Year Tim Tetrick, remained in striking distance throughout but could not close the gap down the stretch.

The race started as a much-anticipated duel between Dewey and Crazed. Racing from the rail, Dewey (who was orphaned at the age of 6 weeks and grew up fending for himself) went the first quarter-mile in 26.4 seconds, with Crazed right behind in the pocket.

Velocity Hall took over second, racing on the outside and keeping Crazed locked in at the rail in third. Dewey maintained the lead for the next half-mile. Dewey reached the three-quarter-mile marker in 1:23.2.

The anticipated battle was on in midstretch as Crazed made his move on Dewey. Crazed tried to catch the favorite, but Schnittker implored his horse to finish strong with some energetic handling.

''Tim [Tetrick] was getting to [Dewey] pretty good, and I got into him,'' said Schnittker, who won his first Hambletonian after two previous third-place finishes.

''I had every shot to beat him, but [Crazed] just couldn't get to him,'' said the 26-year-old Tetrick, who was racing in his second Hambo. ''Dewey is just a great animal.''

Make It Happen, a 46-1 long shot, entered the stretch in eighth after getting away last from the start. He closed quickly on the outside, finishing behind Dewey and Crazed.

Earning the winner's share of $750,000, Dewey pushed his career earnings to more than $1.95 million. Remarkable, considering he was purchased for only $80,000 as a yearling.

For Schnittker, who plans to race next in the World Trotting Derby at DuQuoin, Ill., on Aug. 30, winning the Hambo was a dream realized.

''It don't matter if I die now, I got it,'' he said.
