Helio Castroneves has a theory on why nobody can seem to catch IndyCar Series leader Scott Dixon.
''Scott seems to have a V12 engine,'' Castroneves said after watching Dixon grab the pole for today's Meijer Indy 300 at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta.
Dixon easily earned his fifth pole of the season, averaging 218.968 mph during his four-lap turn around the 1.5-mile oval, his Target Chip Ganassi car snapping Team Penske's streak of three consecutive poles at the track. Vitor Meira will start outside the front row with a four-lap average of 218.409.
''It's been pretty tough the last couple of weekends,'' said Dixon, tied for second on the career IndyCar Series pole list with 13. ''We've missed a little bit on qualifying, hopefully it looks like the car is pretty strong this week.''
The pole will only make it that much harder for the field to catch him. Dixon has won three times this year when he's started from the front, including the Indy 500.
Castroneves, qualified sixth, is hardly ceding the title.
''It's still like 60 points,'' Castroneves said. ''It's still 200 points in the game and what we need to do is just keep pushing as hard as we can.''
Sarah Fisher qualified 16th in her first start since the Indy 500.
Danica Patrick will start in the last row of the 26-car field after wrecking during practice.
More cars: Kanaan stays with Andretti
• Andretti Green Racing announced that 33-year-old Brazilian Tony Kanaan has signed a five-year contract extension through 2013.
• Brian Frisselle and Mark Wilkins raced to their second consecutive Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series victory, leading 78 of the 82 laps in the Crown Royal 200 at Watkins Glen International in New York.
• Ashley Force topped the Funny Car field in the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals in Brainerd, Minn., with a run of 4.110 seconds at 299.40 mph.
Golf: Duke star heads to semifinals
• Duke star Amanda Blumenherst advanced to U.S. Women's Amateur semifinals, beating Spain's Carlota Ciganda 4 and 3 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore. Blumenherst, the three-time national college player of the year, will face 15-year-old Erynn Lee of Silverdale, Wash.
• South Carolina has lost another LPGA event. The organizers of the LPGA's Ginn Tribute hosted by Annika Sorenstam announced they couldn't obtain the sponsorships needed to keep the tournament in Charleston through 2010.
• Rain and a flooded course postponed second-round play and shortened the Scandinavian TPC to a 54-hole tournament in Stockholm, Sweden. Sorenstam held a 1-shot lead after a 6-under 66 Thursday.
Tennis: Fish makes semis
• Mardy Fish moved into the semifinals of the Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Florent Serra of France. Also advancing were No. 3 seed Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, a 7-6 (6), 6-2 winner over American Amer Delic, and German left-hander Denis Gremelmayr, who upset No. 5 seed Marat Safin, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
• French tennis player Mathieu Montcourt was banned from the men's tour for two months and fined $12,000 after being found guilty of betting on matches.
NBA: Grizzlies sign Smith to offer sheet
• The Memphis Grizzlies signed restricted free-agent forward Josh Smith of the Atlanta Hawks to an offer sheet. The Hawks have seven days to match the offer.
• Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller, 64, was released from the hospital, nearly two months after having a heart attack and subsequent setbacks that he said nearly killed him.
• Philadelphia 76ers center Jason Smith tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during an NBA-approved camp in Las Vegas.
College: Mauk loses third appeal
• Quarterback Ben Mauk, one of the key components in Cincinnati's rise to Top 25 prominence last season, had his final appeal for another year of eligibility turned down by the NCAA. It was the third time that Mauk's request for another season has been rejected by the NCAA.
• Arkansas guard Patrick Beverley won't play for the Razorbacks this basketball season, the school said. The school offered no further details.
• Arkansas backup linebacker Freddy Burton, 19, was sentenced to an alcohol awareness class and must pay $230 in fines after pleading guilty to charges stemming from a drunken driving arrest.
NHL: Sabres re-sign Numminen
• The Buffalo Sabres are convinced Teppo Numminen has the heart and ability to play at least one more season after re-signing the veteran defenseman to a one-year, $1.1 million contract. The signing came after the Sabres were assured by both their medical staff and doctors at the Cleveland Clinic that Numminen will be capable of playing at 100 percent after missing all but the Sabres' final game last season following heart surgery to repair a faulty valve.
• The Chicago Blackhawks signed Pascal Pelletier to a one-year contract.
