TORONTO: Ryan Garko remained in manager Eric Wedge's dog house Friday after failing to run hard to first on a ground ball he thought was foul during Wednesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Wedge yanked Garko from that game in the third inning and kept him rooted to the bench Friday night against the Toronto Blue Jays.
''Yeah, that's why he's not playing today,'' Wedge said. ''We'll take it day by day.''
After explaining that he had talked to Garko about the gaffe, Wedge said, ''It's self explanatory. You guys know how I feel about things.''
THE BULLPEN MORASS — Edward Mujica's meltdown (three batters, three runs allowed) in the ninth inning Wednesday hasn't earned him a spot assisting the hot dog vendors at Progressive Field.
''We'll still use Ed,'' Wedge said, none too forcefully. ''It [Wednesday's meltdown] doesn't mean he can't do it. He had 10 or 11 good outings in a row.''
THE NEW (OLD) GUY — Brendan Donnelly was summoned from Triple-A Buffalo, having rehabbed from Tommy John elbow surgery last August. To make room for him on the roster, Tom Mastny was optioned to Triple-A.
''He was throwing 90-91 down there, using his slider and his split,'' Wedge said. ''He looks good, and he feels good.''
Before his injury, Donnelly, 36, was one of the most consistent relievers in the American League. His career numbers include a 25-9 record, four saves and a 2.88 ERA in 303 appearances.
MARTINEZ UPDATE — Victor Martinez (elbow surgery) ran the bases and threw to bases for the second day. If there are no setbacks, he will go on a rehab assignment some time next week, working his way into catching via the designated hitter slot.
IN THE FOLD — The Indians have signed their seventh-round pick in the draft, 21-year-old outfielder Tim Fedroff, who batted .404 with 12 homers, 71 RBI and 78 runs for the University of North Carolina.
FARM FACTS — Jordan Brown had three hits and one RBI in Buffalo's 5-3 win over Indianapolis. . . . Beau Mills doubled, singled and hit his 18th home run of the year, driving in four runs, as Kinston beat Salem 12-6 in Class A. Carlos Santana had four hits to raise his average to .419 in 10 games. . . . Lonnie Chisenhall doubled, singled, and had two RBI, in Mahoning Valley's 7-5 loss to Jamestown in Class A.
