CALENDAR
• Tuesday There will be a backpacking class at the Shady Hollow Pavilion, 1750 Sand Run Parkway in Akron, beginning at 7 p.m. Attend three, two-hour workshops to learn from outdoor recreation volunteers about the proper clothing, gear, food and first-aid needed for a successful backpacking trip. Camp overnight in a Metro Park (optional) on Sept. 20. Food and equipment are not provided. Similar dates: Aug. 26. To register, call 330-865-8065.
• Aug. 23 NEOCATS will be hosting an Open Catfish Tournament at Springfield Lake. Fishing is permitted from boat or shore. Entry fee is $35 per two-person team. Registration starts at 7 p.m. at the boat ramp on state Route 224 in Springfield Township. The tournament runs from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Information: http://www.neocats.bravehost.com or call 330-948-2018.
• Aug. 23 At 6 p.m. at the Little Turtle Pond, 2400 Harrington Road, Akron, kids 15 and under can learn about the basics of fishing. A few rods and reels will be available for use during the program. Bait is provided. Adults must supervise their children but are not permitted to fish. Information: 330-867-5511.
• Sept. 8 The Summit Sportsman's Association meets on the second Monday of the month at the Polish American Club on Dan Street at Glenwood Avenue in Akron from September through June. The club is a mixture of hunters and fishermen. Meetings start at 7:30 p.m. Guests are welcome. Information: 330-753-4453.
• Sept. 11 The Goodyear Hunting & Fishing Club, 1221 Wingfoot Lake Road in Suffield Township, holds its meetings the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. New members are welcome. Contact: Bob Schilling, 330-882-4939.

• Today Lenape Trails Sportsmans Club in Mount Eaton, will hold a 3-D archery shoot from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Entry fee is $8. Similar shoots: Sept. 1. For directions or more information, call 330-695-9826.
• Sunday Streetsboro Sportsman Association will host Sunday morning turkey shoots through Nov. 23. Each shoot is 10 a.m. to noon. The shot closest to the center can win cash, meat and prizes. • Thursday Portage Summit Field and Stream Club, 8405 State Route 224 in Deerfield Township, is hosting a program of summer shooting nights every Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. until Aug. 28. The ranges are open to the public for a fee of $3 per night to cover cost of targets. Events offered include basic pistol, self-defense shooting, light rifle shooting and sport hunting practice shoots. Shooters must provide their own firearms, ammunition and safety equipment. Shooters can qualify for NRA marksmanship awards. Club members, including some NRA pistol instructors, will be on hand to assist shooters. Information: Bruce Knodel, 330-872-0674.

Those purchasing an Ohio hunting license for the first time must complete the hunter education course. Additionally, Ohio hunters seeking licenses in other states may be required to show proof that they completed such a course. No charge. Information: 800-WILDLIFE.
