Fay is expected to land on Fla. Gulf Coast today. Angels plan to stay put
Published on Tuesday, Aug 19, 2008
Associated Press
With Tropical Storm Fay strengthening, Tampa Bay Rays officials were meeting Monday to decide the status of today's game with the Los Angeles Angels.
Fay, which could gain momentum to reach hurricane force, is expected to make landfall on Florida's Gulf Coast today. The Rays and Angels are scheduled to play at 7:10 p.m.
Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said before Monday night's game with the Rays that the Angels were planning to remain in their Florida hotel and not leave the area. Should today's game be postponed, Scioscia said a doubleheader might be played Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Rays closer Troy Percival decided not to have surgery on his injured right knee and hopes to resume throwing off a mound in four or five days. . . . Rays rookie All-Star third baseman Evan Longoria, on the disabled list with a broken bone in his right wrist, will undergo additional X-rays on Friday. He has been out since Aug. 8. . . . Also, the Rays released reliever Al Reyes, who rejected a minor-league assignment. He had been designated for assignment Aug. 9
Pavano could return
Belittled by New York tabloids that call him ''American Idle,'' disparaged by some teammates for his lack of durability, Carl Pavano could return to the Yankees this weekend.
New York needs a fifth starter Saturday at Baltimore, and with Joba Chamberlain and Dan Giese on the disabled list, the choice comes down to Pavano or Phil Hughes.
Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman said teammates shouldn't be dubious of Pavano in his latest comeback attempt.
Kunz demoted for Ayala
The New York Mets optioned right-hander Eddie Kunz to Triple-A New Orleans to make room for newly acquired reliever Luis Ayala.
Kunz had a 13.50 ERA in four relief appearances, allowing four runs in 22/3 innings during his first stint in the major leagues after getting called up Aug. 3.
The Mets acquired Ayala from the Washington Nationals on Sunday for a player to be named. The 30-year-old right-hander is expected to provide help for the Mets bullpen, which has struggled without injured closer Billy Wagner.
Flores is day-to-day
Nationals catcher Jesus Flores has a sprained right knee and was listed as day-to-day.
Flores was injured in a home plate collision in Washington's loss Saturday night to Colorado and did not play Sunday. He was originally diagnosed with a strained right calf.
