Walsh Jesuit quarterback Kyle Snyder rushed for 249 yards and two touchdowns and also threw for two more as the Warriors routed host Licking Valley 48-14.
Senior running back and Ball State recruit Armand Dehaney rushed for 133 yards and two touchdowns and also caught a 20-yard touchdown pass for Walsh Jesuit, the Beacon Journal's preseason top-ranked team. The Warriors rushed for 463 yards, including two 80-yard touchdown runs by Snyder.
Licking Valley, last year's Division III state runner-up, gained 284 yards on the ground, but the staunch Warriors' defense held the Panthers to two rushing touchdowns. Ohio State recruit Storm Klein rushed for 156 yards but failed to reach the end zone.
Snyder, who was 4-for-6 passing for 83 yards, also connected with senior Alex Taylor for a touchdown. Junior running back Cameron Ontko had a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Wadsworth 35, Wooster 19 The host Grizzlies scored 21 points in the third quarter to take control. Junior Anthony Schrock opened the second half with a 73-yard kickoff return. The Grizzlies then scored twice on interceptions and junior outside linebacker Caleb Busson ran 5 yards for a touchdown with 11:16 left in the third and senior defensive back Brett Currens ran 43 yards for a touchdown with 1:46 remaining.
Junior tailback Aarick Jones rushed for two touchdowns. Busson passed for 150 yards and Schrock had four receptions for 83 yards.
Wooster senior Shawn Riley rushed for a 101 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.
Ellet 33, Springfield 7 Junior Devin Richardson rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns and senior Davon Roberson rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown to lead the Orangemen. Ellet sophomore Devin Smith rushed for a touchdown and also had a touchdown reception. Springfield quarterback Scotty Cole threw for 60 yards and a touchdown.
North 68, Rootstown 3 Sophomore Bobby Brown and seniors Donte Covington and Davon Coman each rushed for two touchdowns to lead the visiting Vikings. Brown rushed for 152 yards on five carries, Covington gained 112 yards on six carries and Coman rushed for 100 yards on six carries. North senior Laddie Fair returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown.
East 38, Carrollton 14 Senior quarterback Michael Mosley threw four touchdown passes, two to senior receiver Mike Bickley, to lead visiting East. Mosley passed for 229 yards and Bickley rushed for 101 yards on nine carries. Senior Lonnie Wilborn caught a touchdown pass and also rushed for 101 yards on seven carries.
Stow 31, Kenmore 0 The host Bulldogs gradually pulled away from the Cardinals. Stow senior tight end Sean Carney caught a touchdown pass from senior quarterback Nick Vitt in the second quarter. Bulldogs junior Drew Brown returned an interception 47 yards for a touchdown in the third, and senior Trevor Iwanski caught a 29-yard touchdown pass in the quarter from senior Zack Speer. Stow senior Alex Thomas rushed for a touchdown in the fourth.
Perry 48, Barberton 14 The visiting Panthers rushed for 406 yards on 42 carries. Junior Caleb Laps rushed for a touchdown and 163 yards on nine carries. Senior quarterback John Hyde threw two touchdown passes and completed 9-of-10 for 106 yards. Magics junior quarterback Kyle Snyder threw for 207 yards and two touchdowns.
Jackson 12, Copley 7 Senior Steve Gardner returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown and seniors Max Paulus and Zach Faas connected on a 27-yard touchdown pass to lead the host Polar Bears. Sophomore Will Logan intercepted a pass in the back of the end zone with about three minutes remaining in the game to seal the win. Junior T.J. Carter rushed for Copley's lone touchdown.
North Canton Hoover 41, Washington, D.C., Dunbar 22 Junior Erick Howard rushed for and 185 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries to lead the host Vikings. Junior Jordan Witt rushed for two touchdowns for Hoover.
Massillon 45, Buchtel 29 Senior quarterback Mike Clark and junior receiver Bo Grunder connected for four touchdowns and Clark rushed for another touchdown to lead the host Tigers. Buchtel senior Tahj Dent returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown and also had two rushing touchdowns.
Alliance 39, Crestwood 26 Junior running back Dail'len Cottle rushed for two touchdowns and returned a fumble for another touchdown to help the Aviators. Senior fullback Delion Freeman scored two touchdowns for Alliance.
Warren JFK 27, CVCA 7 Eagles senior quarterback Dominic LaPolla passed for 172 yards and rushed for three touchdowns. CVCA running back John Pettigrew rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown.
West Branch 48, Southeast 6 Quarterback Mike Smith passed for 253 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for two more as the host Warriors routed the Pirates. Southeast quarterback Anthony Pennington was 8-for-17 passing with 118 yards.
Marlington 25, St. Thomas Aquinas 20 Marlington senior Quinton Howard returned two interceptions for touchdowns and rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown to lead the Dukes in a come-from-behind win. Marlington quarterback Tyler Royer passed for 98 yards and a touchdown.
Garfield Heights Trinity 19, Coventry 7 Quarterback Alex Nydsa was 5-for-10 for 141 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Trojans. Coventry wide receiver Jeff Walker had six catches for 87 yards, and senior tight end Ethan Wichterman had 63 yards receiving and a touchdown.
Field 28, Waterloo 0 Quarterback Matt Eldreth connected with wide receiver Mike Boosinger twice for touchdowns to lead the host Falcons. Eldreth also rushed for scores of 1 and 28 yards. Waterloo senior Dylan Wartluft carried 14 times for 59 yards.
Garrettsville 21, Middlefield Cardinal 0 Brenton Semplak rushed for 107 yards and a touchdown to lead the host G-Men. Quarterback Travis Macek threw a touchdown pass to Caleb Schwan and also scored on a 10-yard run. Middlefield totaled only 39 yards of offense.
Jackson-Milton 30, Windham 8 Wilbur Wilson rushed for 78 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bluejays. Windham running back Jesse Burns rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown and also passed for 59 yards.
Mogadore 27, Mineral Ridge 7 Sophomore Kodey Chance rushed for 83 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Wildcats. Senior quarterback Chad White threw for 110 yards and a touchdown, and sophomore defensive end Jake McAvinew had a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery to lead the defense.
Waynedale 55, Tusky Valley 7 Thad Nofsinger rushed for 126 yards and three touchdowns to lead visiting Waynedale. Receiver Cory Stryker caught five passes for 90 yards and also rushed for a touchdown and recovered a fumble for a touchdown.
Brunswick 51, Mansfield 35 Running back Brit Musal rushed for 61 yards and three touchdowns to lead the visiting Blue Devils. Brunswick quarterback Ricky Manco threw for 150 yards and had a rushing touchdown.
New Philadelphia 28, Canton Central Catholic 7 Junior quarterback Cody Cox ran for two touchdowns and passed for another as the Quakers built a 28-point halftime lead. CCC quarterback Kyle Dureska ran 1 yard for a touchdown with 46 seconds left to prevent the shutout.
Athlete nominations
Nominations for fall sports Athletes of the Week may be made by high school coaches or athletic directors beginning Monday. At least two boys and two girls will be honored each Thursday.
Players in all fall sports are eligible for the awards.
Nominations should include statistical information and a process for obtaining a color photo of the player.
