Bristol pole is first of year for Edwards

Points leader Kyle Busch is ninth

From Beacon Journal wire services

Carl Edwards won his first pole position of the season Friday, turning a lap at 121.860 mph in qualifying for tonight's Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tenn.

Edwards, who trails only Kyle Busch in the points standings, is 222 points behind, but followed up his victory last weekend in Michigan with his fourth career pole.

Busch, with eight wins and two poles this season, will start ninth.

David Reutimann put his Toyota on the outside of Edwards' Ford on the front row, turning a lap at 121.175 mph.

More motorsports: Raikkonen fastest

• Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen set the pace in practice for the European Grand Prix in Valencia, Spain, with drivers getting their first experience on the new Valencia street circuit. Raikkonen, the Finnish world champion, had a best lap of 1 minute, 39.477 seconds on the 3.4-mile course to edge Renault driver Fernando Alonso, who was second 0.02 behind.

Football: Buckeyes name captains

James Laurinaitis will serve for a second year as an Ohio State captain, joining quarterback Todd Boeckman, cornerback Malcolm Jenkins and wide receiver Brian Robiskie as leaders of the football team this fall. Laurinaitis, an All-American linebacker and winner of the Butkus Award a year ago, becomes just the seventh Ohio State player to be a captain for two years. The others were Richard T. Ellis (1891-92), Archie Griffin (1974-75), Glen Cobb (1981-82), Thomas ''Pepper'' Johnson (1984-85), Joe Cooper (2000-01) and Steve Bellisari (2000-01).

• Notre Dame tight end Mike Ragone, expected to vie for the starting position, will miss the season after undergoing surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Golf: Stricker leads at Barclays

Steve Stricker shot a 7-under 64 to take a 3-shot lead over Hunter Mahan at The Barclays in Paramus, N.J. Stricker, 21st in the FedEx Cup standings, had a 10-under 132 total on the tree-lined A.W. Tillinghast layout, the tournament site for the first time after 41 seasons at Westchester. Mahan, 31st in the FedEx Cup standings, followed his opening 62 with a 73.

Angela Park shot a 6-under 66 to take a 1-shot lead over six players after the first round of the LPGA Safeway Classic in Portland, Ore.

• University of Georgia teammates Adam Mitchell and Patrick Reed advanced to the U.S. Amateur semifinals in Pinehurst, N.C. Mitchell rallied to defeat Charlie Holland 2 and 1 in one quarterfinal, and Reed defeated Graham Hill 4 and 3 to reach a semifinal matchup today against perhaps the field's hottest player: fellow 18-year-old Danny Lee. Lee, who hasn't needed more than 15 holes to win any of his four match-play rounds, beat Morgan Hoffmann 4 and 3. Mitchell will face Florida State's Drew Kittleson, who defeated former Louisville player Derek Fathauer 3 and 2.

Mark Wiebe birdied four of his first five holes, then added two more on the back nine to shoot 67. That gave him a share of the first-round lead with Scott Simpson at the Champions Tour Boeing Classic in Snoqualmie, Wash.

Darren Clarke shot a 6-under 64 to join Robert Rock and Alexander Noren in the lead after the second round of the KLM Open in Zandvoort, Netherlands.

Baseball: Instant replay close

• Baseball owners and players were close to finalizing an agreement on instant replay, and an announcement on the start of the innovation likely will be announced next week. Management and the umpires' union signed an agreement Wednesday, leaving a deal with players as the next step. That process was just about wrapped up, two people familiar with the talks said, speaking on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made.

• Boston Red Sox outfielder J.D. Drew has a herniated disk in his back, but is optimistic the pain will subside without a trip to the disabled list.

• The Blue Jays placed outfielder Brad Wilkerson on the 15-day DL with lower back spasms and added utilityman Jose Bautista to the 25-man roster.

• The Colorado Rockies activated outfielder Scott Podsednik from the 15-day DL and optioned catcher Adam Melhuse to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

• The Texas Rangers activated infielder Hank Blalock from the 15-day disabled list and optioned third baseman Travis Metcalf to Triple-A Oklahoma.

Basketball: Celtics sign Miles

• The Boston Celtics signed former Cavaliers forward Darius Miles, who missed the last two NBA seasons because of knee injuries.

• The New Orleans Hornets signed former Cavaliers guard Devin Brown.

• The San Antonio Spurs have re-signed veteran guard Michael Finley. Terms of the deal weren't released.

• The Denver Nuggets re-signed restricted free agent J.R. Smith to a multiyear contract.
