Big Ten on Time Warner

Basic cable deal arrives before Saturday's game

By George M. Thomas
Beacon Journal sports writer

The Big Ten Network and Time Warner Cable reached an agreement in principle for the year-old cable network to be carried in time for Ohio State's season opener against Youngstown State on Saturday.

The deal calls for Time Warner to carry the channel on expanded basic on all of its systems in the eight states where Big Ten schools operate.

''We have a handshake deal with Fox [the Big Ten Network's partner] that will ensure that Time Warner customers will be able to watch the game this weekend,'' said Bill Jasso, Time Warner's vice president for government affairs and media relations. ''And we are confident that we'll reach a deal for carriage shortly.''

''The pending agreement will ensure that Time Warner Cable's customers across these Big Ten states will have access to this Saturday's Big Ten college football season openers and all future Big Ten Network programming on an expanded basic level of service,'' the Big Ten Network and Time Warner said in a joint statement.

Big Ten Network and Time Warner have been locked in a battle over the station since the network began. When Comcast, the nation's top video provider reached a deal last spring, an agreement with Time Warner seemed to be a foregone conclusion.

That hasn't been the case. In recent days, negotiations had grown contentious, with both sides negotiating through the media.

No details of the deal were available.
