OSU game will air on Channel 77
Published on Wednesday, Aug 27, 2008
From staff and wire reports
Ohio State fans will be able to watch the Buckeyes play Youngstown State in each team's 2008 football opener on Channel 77 at noon Saturday when the Big Ten Network makes its debut on Time Warner Cable. The game will be simulcast on Channel 333.
The University of Akron game at Wisconsin, also at noon Saturday, will air on Channel 334. A digital converter box or cable card will be necessary to watch that game.
Channel positions for high definition are not available, a spokeswoman for Time Warner Cable said. That is something still being worked on.
Time Warner and BTN ended intense negotiations Monday night when they agreed to a deal in principle. Both sides expected a final agreement to be signed soon.

Tennis: No. 1 Ivanovic survives scare
• Top-seed Ana Ivanovic rallied past Vera Dushevina 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 for a first-round victory in the U.S. Open in New York. Serena Williams also advanced, overwhelming Kateryna Bondarenko with her serve in a 6-1, 6-4 victory. Seventh-seeded Venus Williams advanced, too, beating Samantha Stosur 6-2, 6-3. Roger Federer, aiming for his fifth consecutive U.S. Open title, played later Tuesday night.
Football: Manning returns to practice
• Peyton Manning is finally healthy enough to start practicing with the Indianapolis Colts. Coach Tony Dungy said the Colts activated the two-time NFL Most Valuable Player, clearing the way for him to begin working out with his teammates. Manning had been on the physically unable to perform list since training camp opened after surgery to remove an infected bursa sac from his left knee July 14. . . . The Colts placed kick returner T.J. Rushing and backup tight end Zac Herold on injured reserve, ending their seasons.
• Seven-time New York Giants Pro Bowler Michael Strahan is staying retired. Giants general manager Jerry Reese has asked Strahan, 36, to reconsider his retirement on Monday, just 48 hours after the Super Bowl champions lost Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora for the season to a knee injury.
• New York Jets coach Eric Mangini says he's leaning toward not playing quarterback Brett Favre in the team's preseason finale at the Philadelphia Eagles.
• Buffalo Bills starting quarterback Trent Edwards returned to practice after missing a week with a bruised right thigh.
• The Carolina Panthers addressed their lack of depth at wide receiver by signing Samie Parker, a day after he was released by the Denver Broncos. The Panthers made room on the 75-man roster Tuesday by waiving rookie receiver Sean Bailey.
• Wide receiver David Tyree was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform reserve list by the New York Giants, meaning the player who made a game-saving catch in the Super Bowl won't be making any for at least the first six weeks of the season.
• Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks Tarvaris Jackson and Gus Frerotte will sit out the preseason finale at Dallas on Thursday night. That opens the door for coaches to settle on a third quarterback — either veteran Brooks Bollinger or rookie John David Booty.
• The Houston Texans placed cornerback Dunta Robinson on the physically-unable-to-perform list as they trimmed the active roster to 75 players.
• Colorado University tight end Riar Greer was sentenced to two years' probation and 50 hours of community service after pleading guilty in an off-campus brawl.
• Daryll Clark will start at quarterback for Penn State when the Nittany Lions open the season Saturday.
• Sean Glennon will be Virginia Tech's starting quarterback this year while sophomore Tyrod Taylor red-shirts.
Other: Ex-NBA player Duckworth dies
• Former Portland Trail Blazer center Kevin Duckworth died while on a trip to the Oregon Coast to host a free basketball clinic. He was 44.
• Former NBA player Wayman Tisdale, 44, had part of his right leg amputated because of bone cancer.
• The Boston Celtics signed their first-round draft pick, J.R. Giddens.
• NASCAR driver Reed Sorenson signed a multiyear contract to join Gillett Evernham Motorsports, beginning in 2009.
• The Budweiser Shootout at Daytona will have a new format that places the emphasis on the four manufacturers in NASCAR's Sprint Cup series. The 31st annual season-opening event at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 7 will have a field of 24 cars representing the top six teams from Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford and Toyota. It will be based on the 2008 final car owner points.
