CLEVELAND: Ryan Garko has had a down and up season, opening speculation that Indians officials do not consider him the obvious choice to be the everyday first baseman in 2009.
''I think he's capable of it,'' manager Eric Wedge said. ''But sitting here today, I'm not sure how that's going to play out, just because I'm uncertain about what the winter is going to lead to.''
One of General Manager Mark Shapiro's offseason objectives is to acquire a corner infielder or outfielder who produces runs.
GETTING HIS WORK IN — After one day in the lineup, Victor Martinez was back on the sidelines playing catch. Today, he will crouch behind the plate and practice throwing to second and third.
OTHER STUFF — The Indians are 4-9 in one-run decisions. . . . In five starts for the Tribe, Anthony Reyes has a 2.01 ERA. . . . Andy Marte has a seven-game hitting streak (.346 on 9-for-26). . . . In his past 20 games, Shin-Soo Choo is batting .342 with 10 doubles and four home runs.
FARM FACTS — Scott Lewis (2-2, 2.63 ERA) threw six scoreless innings, giving up two hits, as Buffalo blanked Pawtucket 2-0 in Class AAA.
