Kent State basketball player arrested over noise law

Chris Singletary also faces resisting charge

Beacon Journal staff report

Kent State basketball player Chris Singletary was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with violating a noise ordinance after receiving a warning at his Olympus Drive apartment, according to a Kent police report.

Singletary, 20, became uncooperative with police offers on their second visit to the residence and was arrested, the report said.

The junior guard also was charged with resisting arrest, police said. He sustained wrist and shoulder injuries, according to the report.

''Coach Ford and I are gathering the facts from those involved and the Kent city police,'' Kent State Director of Athletics Laing Kennedy said. ''Once we determine the facts, we will take appropriate action.''

''In the meantime, we will continue to support Chris and value him as a member of the program.''

This is the fourth time in less than a year the Chicago native has had a run-in with a local law enforcement agency, according to Portage County court records.

Singletary was suspended for one game last season following an OVI arrest Jan. 26.

On March 10, he was charged with nuisance party regulations. He also was arrested on April 7 on charges of driving under DUI suspension.

Singletary averaged 10.3 points and 3.2 rebounds a game last season. He was released on bond early Sunday morning and is scheduled to appear in court at 8:15 a.m. Thursday.

UA men's soccer
ranked 5th in nation

The University of Akron men's soccer team is receiving rewards for its quick start to this season.

The Zips, who won the tournament title last weekend in Bloomington, Ind., are now ranked fifth in the nation, moving up seven slots. Individually, sophomore Steve Zakuani was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday for his effort in the Indiana Classic. He had a goal and an assist against the Fighting Irish.

Freshman defender Kofi Sarkodie was one of 12 players named to Soccer America's Team of the Week.

The Zips beat No. 3 Notre Dame 3-0 and earned a 0-0 tie in double overtime against No. 7 Indiana.

As for the No. 5 ranking, it is UA's highest designation since being the No. 1 team for four weeks during the 2005 season.

UA (1-0-1) plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lee Jackson Field to open its home schedule against West Virginia.

Zips' Jeff Boals
receives promotion

Zips men's basketball coach Keith Dambrot promoted Jeff Boals to associate head coach Tuesday. He is in his third year with UA and is the recruiting coordinator.

Have you noticed no one on any of the Akron teams has a record like this guy? Hmm, interesting.
