Grizzlies give Bees a swat

Wadsworth, Medina quarterbacks dominate rushing game

By David Lee Morgan Jr.
Beacon Journal sports writer

WADSWORTH: Every coach wants to do it — establish the run.

But not necessarily with your quarterbacks. In the case of Wadsworth and Medina, that's just how it worked out Thursday night.

Wadsworth defeated Medina 43-27 at Art Wright Memorial Stadium in a nonconference matchup. Junior quarterback Caleb Busson led the Grizzlies (2-1) with 157 yards (126 in the first half) on 16 carries and two rushing touchdowns (29 and 15 yards.) He also threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Anthony Schrock late in the second quarter.

''This was just one of those where the running game opened up for us,'' Busson said.

There was a reason. Wadsworth coach Greg Dennison said the offensive line of David Kauffman, Jordan Richards, Joe Powers, Zach Watts and Ben Buzzelli had a great week of practice.

''Our offensive line really improved from last week,'' Dennison said.

The Grizzlies lost to Nordonia 24-14 a week ago.

''That was one area of concern from last week but we were able to let Caleb make plays and it carried over to others,'' Dennison said.

Like junior running back Aarick Jones, who carried the ball 13 times for 93 yards and two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, just as Busson led the ground attack for Wadsworth, his counterpart did the same.

Medina senior quarterback Pat O'Boyle (6-foot-1, 190 pounds) sliced and diced and broke numerous tackles on his way to rushing for a game-high 206 yards on 19 carries and three touchdowns. He had 168 yards in the first half.

''It surprised me a little,'' O'Boyle said of the yards he gained on the ground. ''I was just trying to get things going.''

Medina coach Greg Reed, who has a relatively young team, is hoping a few other playmakers emerge.

''Pat does a great job but we have to get other guys involved,'' he said. ''You can't count on one guy.''

O'Boyle's impressive first-half rushing performance included an 82-yard touchdown run with 1:36 left in the first quarter to help cut Wadsworth's lead to 14-7. Busson's two touchdown runs in the first quarter put the Grizzlies ahead 14-0 before O'Boyle's touchdown.

With 3:38 left before halftime, O'Boyle helped Medina tie the score at 14 on a spectacular run that started to the left. He broke three tackles, then reversed field and scampered around the right side of the field, eventually diving into the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown. The play seemed like it was longer, however.

But that's when Wadsworth managed to land two knockout punches with less than a minute remaining before halftime to put the Bees away.

Busson orchestrated a scoring drive that started at Wadsworth's 24 and ended on a 1-yard touchdown run by Bart Randolph with 58 seconds left for a 21-14 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Wadsworth kicker Matt Reed squib-kicked the ball off the tee, and the ball was recovered by Jake Palidar at Medina's 39 with 35 seconds left.

It was plenty of time for Busson and the Grizzlies to strike, and they did 23 seconds later. Busson threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Schrock to make it 29-14 Grizzlies.

The Bees couldn't recover.

''Even when we were down 21-14, we felt OK, but that second touchdown was a knock in the stomach for us,'' Reed said.
