Stewart, Logano avoid probation

NASCAR rescinds earlier decision

From Beacon Journal wire services

Tony Stewart and Joey Logano will not be on probation in the NASCAR Nationwide Series after all.

A three-man panel of the National Stock Car Racing Commission issued a decision rescinding the probation handed down to the drivers after the Joe Gibbs Racing team was caught trying to manipulate an engine horsepower test following the Nationwide race at Michigan last month.

The team used magnets under the gas pedals of the Nos. 20 and 18 JGR Toyotas in an attempt to keep NASCAR from getting an accurate read of the horsepower in the two engines.

NASCAR came down hard on the team a few days later, suspending indefinitely seven crew members, including crew chiefs Dave Rogers and Jason Ratcliff, who were also fined $50,000 each.

In addition, Stewart and Logano were each docked 150 driver points and placed on probation until the end of the year, while the Gibbs team was also stripped of 150 owner points for each car.

The team appealed only the probation to the two drivers, saying they had nothing to do with the test that took place long after the race had ended.

After reviewing the testimony presented during the hearing, the panel, including Buddy Baker, Jim Williams and commission chairman George Silbermann, unanimously decided to amend the penalties, removing the probation portions of both driver penalties. The rest of the penalties remain intact.

Golf: PGA event rained out

• The first round of the BMW Championship was washed out by steady rain that deluged Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, another setback for a tournament plagued by bad timing. The opening round will be today, with 36 holes scheduled for Saturday to get it back on schedule.

• Teenager Rory McIlroy shot an 8-under 63 to take a 3-stroke lead after the first round of the European Masters in Crans-Sur-Sierre, Switzerland.

Annika Sorenstam will play her last tournament in Europe this weekend at the Nykredit Masters at Helsingoer, Denmark. The second-ranked Swede, who will retire at the end of the season, headlines the Ladies European Tour event at Simon's Golf Club.

Hockey: Blues sign Pietrangelo

• The St. Louis Blues signed defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, the fourth overall pick in the June draft. The 18-year-old Pietrangelo will get a chance to make the team when training camp begins Sept. 19.

• The Atlanta Thrashers signed first-round pick Zach Bogosian to an entry-level contract. The 18-year-old defenseman was selected third overall after scoring 11 goals and 61 points with Peterborough of the Ontario Hockey League.

Other: Tulane suspends player

• Tulane has suspended senior football safety David Skehan, meaning he will miss the Green Wave's season opener at Alabama on Saturday. Tulane football coach Bob Toledo did not specify what Skehan's violation was. Skehan will be reinstated after Tulane returns from Tuscaloosa, Ala., the team said.

Chris Nickson threw for a touchdown and ran for another and Vanderbilt finally beat a ranked opponent on its own field, upsetting No. 24 South Carolina 24-17 in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.

• A Penn State football player has been kicked off the team for an undisclosed violation of team rules, and three others will miss this weekend's game against Oregon State because of a separate, off-field issue coach Joe Paterno said. Reserve defensive back Willie Harriott is off the squad, Paterno said Thursday night on his weekly radio show. In November, Harriott, of New Haven, Conn., was arrested for driving under the influence and speeding. Paterno also said Thursday that defensive linemen Maurice Evans and Abe Koroma, and tight end Andrew Quarless will sit out Saturday's game against Oregon State. Paterno said he's still gathering information on a recent off-field incident.

• The Belarus silver and bronze medalists in the men's hammer throw at the Beijing Olympics are being investigated for doping offenses by the International Olympic Committee. Vadim Devyatovskiy and Ivan Tsikhan tested positive for traces of testosterone after the hammer final on Aug. 17, the Russian news agency Allsport said.

• Curlin will get his chance to become thoroughbred racing's richest horse later this month in the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park in New York. The 2007 Horse of the Year, fresh from a victory in the Woodward Stakes at Saratoga in upstate New York, has earned $9,796,800 with 10 wins in 13 career starts. The record of $9,999,815 is held by Cigar.
