BEREA: Browns free safety Brodney Pool's chances of playing in Sunday's season opener against the Dallas Cowboys look less likely after he missed practice Thursday.
Recovering from an Aug. 18 concussion that was the third of his four-year career, Pool participated on a limited basis Wednesday. He was nowhere to be seen Thursday, however, even when the trainers came out with injured players Rex Hadnot and Kris Griffin.
Pool would be replaced by nickel back Mike Adams, who made 18 NFL starts with the San Francisco 49ers.
Browns coach Romeo Crennel did not mention whether Pool had had a setback. He said the team still was evaluating him, along with receiver/returner Joshua Cribbs (high ankle sprain), right guard Ryan Tucker (hip surgery in May) and running back Jamal Lewis (hamstring). Crennel said that after the players visited with team doctor Anthony Miniaci on Thursday night, he would have a better idea of their status.
Cribbs, Lewis, Tucker and Beau Bell (arthroscopic knee surgery Aug. 7) were limited Thursday, but strong safety Sean Jones (swollen knee) was upgraded to full participation. The seven listed on the full participation list Wednesday, including quarterback Derek Anderson and receiver Braylon Edwards, were removed from the injury list. Also sitting out was rookie tight end Martin Rucker.
Tucker seems unlikely to play, especially since Crennel said Tucker worked with the scout team Wednesday.
''He wants to work into it as opposed to just jumping off the diving board, and that's probably a good thing with a hip fracture like that,'' Crennel said. ''But he's making progress and he feels good about being out there in pads and being able to take some snaps.''
As for Lewis, Crennel said he ''looked OK.''
''If he's making progress and heading toward [100] percent, then maybe by Sunday he'll be where he needs to be. So then that's just a judgment call that we'll have to make.''
Arrive early
Browns fans are encouraged to arrive early for Sunday's 4:15 p.m. kickoff because part of a pregame ceremony in the team's Hats off to Heroes program will include a tribute to fallen police officers Derek Owens of Cleveland and Joshua Miktarian of Twinsburg. The Ohio State University Marching Band will perform the national anthem and entertain at halftime.
Free autographs
The Akron Browns Backers will welcome four former Browns players for a free autograph session from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at HartvilleMarketPlace.
Hanford Dixon, Tom Cousineau, Felix Wright and Tim Manoa are to appear.
The MarketPlace opens at 9 a.m. and is on Edison Street (state Route 619) behind the Hartville Kitchen.
