College briefs - KSU's Singletary suspended from play

KSU's Singletary
suspended from play

Kent State basketball player Chris Singletary was suspended indefinitely from competition by the Kent State Athletic Department.

Singletary pleaded not guilty Thursday to resisting arrest and violating a noise ordinance Sunday at his Olympus Drive apartment.

A pretrial hearing is set for 10 a.m. Oct. 9.

''While we are disappointed with Chris' actions over the weekend, he still has our support and is a valued member of our program. We believe that the suspension is a necessary step at this time until the issue is resolved by the judicial system,''Athletic Director Laing Kennedy said in a news release.

Singletary was a key player for the Flashes last season. He averaged 10.3 points and 3.2 rebounds a game as the Flashes reached the 20-win mark for the 10th consecutive season and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Mid-American Conference title.

He will be allowed to participate in other team activities during his suspension.
