Titans coach Fisher defends decision to call police Monday concerning safety of injured Vince Young
Published on Wednesday, Sep 10, 2008
Associated Press
New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick says he's in no rush to sign a new quarterback.
Belichick spoke Tuesday, one day after losing Most Valuable Player Tom Brady for the season due to a knee injury.
The coach said quarterbacks Tim Rattay and Chris Simms were in Foxborough, Mass, on Monday, but they didn't work out or take physicals.
It appears the team will go into Sunday's game against the New York Jets with two quarterbacks — veteran backup Matt Cassel and rookie Kevin O'Connell. Cassel replaced Brady in the Patriots' 17-10 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
And Belichick says the team hasn't decided on whether to add another quarterback.
Young is just fine
Jeff Fisher said the Tennessee Titans didn't have the luxury of waiting to be sure about the safety of their quarterback, Vince Young, before calling police for help in finding him.
That led to four hours of uncertainty Monday night before Young contacted the Titans and met with Fisher, a psychologist and police crisis negotiators at the team's headquarters before driving himself home.
Combined with Young's reaction to being booed during Sunday's opener, his mental state has been questioned the past two days.
''We can never be too careful sometimes, and sometimes you can't jump to conclusions. You have to wait on information and be patient,'' Fisher said. ''The information I had didn't afford us any patience.''
Young has a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee, and Fisher said the quarterback will not play Sunday at the Cincinnati Bengals. The coach would not give a timetable past that, calling the test results good news and saying that Young needs to heal up his leg.
Merriman out for season
Star outside linebacker Shawne Merriman pulled the plug on his 2008 season when he told the San Diego Chargers he'll have surgery on the two torn ligaments in his left knee.
The loss of Merriman, whose hard hits earned him the nickname ''Lights Out,'' is a big one for a team that has Super Bowl expectations.
Merriman's decision came two days after he barely resembled the player who had an NFL-high 391/2 sacks in the past three seasons and played in three straight Pro Bowls.
Merriman had only two tackles in a 26-24 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
Changes for Seahawks
Following a season-opening loss at the Buffalo Bills, the Seattle Seahawks began making changes by releasing punter Ryan Plackemeier, running back Justin Forsett and wide receiver Jordan Kent.
The moves to release Forsett and Kent are likely to open two roster spots for nickel back Jordan Babineaux and starting defensive tackle Rocky Bernard, both of whom missed the opener under league suspension. The Seahawks also placed wide receiver Nate Burleson on injured reserve.
