Still-sore Wells out for game

Buckeyes must find way to defeat Trojans without star running back

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES: Ohio State running back Chris Wells will not play for the fifth-ranked Buckeyes against No. 1 Southern California tonight.

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel made the announcement late Friday afternoon after the team went through a 40-minute walkthrough at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

''He's been getting treatment 15 times a day,'' Tressel told the assembled media just minutes after he told his team of the decision. ''I guess if looks could kill, he fought me. I just told the team because it's important our guys know what we thought we should do.''

The Trojans (1-0) will be playing their first game since an impressive 52-7 victory Aug. 30 at Virginia. Ohio State (2-0) has beaten in-state opposition Youngstown State 43-0 and Ohio University 26-14.

Wells, who rushed for 1,609 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, injured his right foot in the opener and without him, the Buckeyes had to rally to beat the lightly regarded Bobcats last weekend.

Tressel said early in the week that Wells would play, but it was a different story Thursday, when he said the 6-foot-1, 237-pound junior was doubtful because of lingering soreness in his foot.

Redshirt freshman Dan Herron, sophomore Brandon Saine and senior Maurice Wells shared the carries for Ohio State against Ohio University.

Buckeyes buzz

Oh, it's 'bout to get hectic, all right.

Wide receiver Ray Small sounded off a bit last weekend about USC's program and his words will undoubtedly be posted on the Trojans' locker room bulletin board.

Small and defensive lineman Robert Rose visited USC three years ago before deciding on Ohio State.

''I took my visit to USC, I'm like, 'How are they successful? They're not even serious about the game,' '' Small said. ''Before the game, they're all going crazy. Me and Rob Rose was on the visit and I'm looking like, 'Wow.' And then the [USC assistant] coach said, 'You better get out of here. It's 'bout to get hectic.' ''

Later, the two visited the Buckeyes.

''And then I come on the [Ohio State] visit and before the game, it's all quiet, everybody getting taped, coaches talking, it's the total opposite,'' he said.

He summed it up by saying, it's ''a class thing. Here at Ohio State, they teach you to be a better man. There, it's just all about football.''

Coach Jim Tressel and at least one Buckeyes assistant have discounted what Small said. But rest assured the Trojans were well aware of his words.

No rain in California

The skies were overcast and the temperature in the high 70s on Friday afternoon as Ohio State's players took a side trip to a pier in the Santa Monica area. Game time temperatures are expected to be about 80 degrees under sunny skies.

Sideline celebs

Academy Award-winning actors Denzel Washington and Jamie Foxx are among the 150 to 200 fans who have been issued Coliseum sideline passes for the game.

''I wish everybody could have the experience,'' USC coach Pete Carroll told the Los Angeles Times. ''You can't see anything, it's not a great place to watch the game. [But] it's just kind of cool and fun to be there.''

Officials hinted that several other famous faces might be drifting near the Trojans bench.

Change of plans

The Buckeyes did not have a walkthrough after arriving in L.A. on Thursday night and the culprit wasn't a big surprise. Heavy traffic precluded the team busing to the Coliseum for a quick look around. Instead, the squad went directly from the airport to its hotel.

sports coverage by the Beacon has dwindled from being one of the best in Ohio to pathetic, whether the Browns, Tribe or Cavs, or any of the collegiate sports they do real well with high schools, though, which sets their rating.
