Wadsworth 13, Revere 9
Defense, Schrock propel Grizzlies past Minutemen

Senior receiver helps Wadsworth overcome mistakes

By Jonas Fortune
Beacon Journal sports writer

BATH TWP.: The rain stopped before the Suburban League opener Friday night between Wadsworth and Revere. But that didn't mean the football wasn't slippery.

The Grizzlies turned the ball over five times at Joseph F. Pappano Stadium. Fortunately, their defense, and a lot of Anthony Schrock, were there to help them beat the Minutemen.

''Offensively, we made way too many mistakes, and they are too good of a team to do that against, but our defense bailed us out,'' Wadsworth coach Greg Dennison said.

In what turned out to be a physical game, both teams found little space to maneuver.

Wadsworth had 58 yards rushing, 54 by junior quarterback Caleb Busson.

Revere finished the game 221 yards overall but could never make the big play when it was needed.

Junior John Battaglia carried the ball 20 times for 58 yards and one touchdown. He scored with less than two minutes remaining.

''It was very physical. It was a good game,'' Revere coach Terry Cistone said. ''We just didn't execute offensively. We forced four fumbles, and we had good field position, but we just kept breaking down.''

The Grizzlies heavily relied on junior receiver Schrock to sustain an offense. Of Busson's 12 completions, 10 of them went to the 6-foot-4 Schrock, who outmuscled and outjumped Revere defenders for the ball on his way to 170 yards and a touchdown.

''It's awesome,'' Busson said. ''I know every time I throw the ball to Schrock, it's about a 99 percent chance of Schrock catching it over the DB.''

Perhaps the easiest catch Schrock had was his 20-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter.

As Schrock lined up in the slot, the Revere defense was late picking him up, allowing him to race downfield and catch the pass with no one within a five-yard radius.

''He makes plays for us. He has been making them all year,'' Dennison said. ''Caleb did a good job of giving him a chance on those fades.''

The Grizzlies were able to avert disaster twice in the first half, as they escaped with a 7-3 lead. On its first offensive series, Wadsworth attempted to run an option, but Busson's pitch was wide of Schrock.

Revere senior defensive tackle Donald Day fell on the football, giving the Minutemen quality field position on the Wadsworth 39. Yet Revere could not take advantage of the situation on a three-plays-and-out series.

Wadsworth was unable to pitch the ball again near the end of the first quarter, giving the Minutemen the ball at the Wadsworth 30, but the Grizzlies' defense limited Revere to three plays again before senior defensive end Josh Hamblen stripped the ball away from Revere quarterback Zach Weidrick.

The change in momentum sent the Grizzlies on an 11-play, 68-yard drive, ending with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Busson to junior Louden Gordon.

Gordon caught the ball near the 7-yard line, absorbed a big hit from junior Adam Richards and spun away before finding the end zone.
