Sore elbow sidelines pitcher who could be in 2009 rotation

CLEVELAND: Anthony Reyes is calling it a season. Rather, Indians officials are calling it a season for him.
''We're shutting Reyes down,'' manager Eric Wedge said Tuesday. ''There's still some inflammation [in his right elbow], and there's no sense pushing it.''
Wedge indicated that he and pitching coach Carl Willis had seen enough of Reyes to know that he can challenge for a spot in the rotation next spring.
''He showed us what we needed to see,'' Wedge said. ''Now, we just want to make sure he's healthy for spring training.''
In describing Reyes' assets, Wedge said: ''He did a great job with his fastball. His change-up is a plus pitch, and I saw a better breaking ball than was advertised. He's also got that stoic attitude; nothing fazed him.''
Wedge concurred that ''as of right now,'' only two pitchers are certain to make the rotation: Cliff Lee and Fausto Carmona.
The rest of the current field consists of Jeremy Sowers, Aaron Laffey, Scott Lewis, Zach Jackson and Reyes. The list could expand, particularly if General Manager Mark Shapiro acquires a starter in the offseason. Lewis will take Reyes' place in the rotation.
''Scott has done enough to stay in the rotation, anyway,’’ Wedge said. ''We would have found a way to keep him in there even if Reyes was ready to pitch.''
Before Reyes was traded from the St. Louis Cardinals to the Indians July 26, he spent time on the Cardinals' disabled list with soreness in his elbow. But he had to pass a physical before the deal could be consummated, so consequently, his elbow problem probably isn't serious. However, he probably will undergo an MRI scan in the near future.
''I think that's the plan,'' Wedge said.
In six starts for the Indians, Reyes compiled a 2-1 record and 1.83 ERA to go with a 2-1 record and 4.91 ERA in 10 National League appearances, none of them starts. Wedge speculated that being shifted from starter to reliever and back might have triggered his elbow pain.
''That is something we talked about,'' he said. 'John Meloan has no arm issues, and we want to keep it that way. We want to be careful with him, too.''
Meloan was a career reliever, whom the Los Angeles Dodgers this year made into a starter without success. He was traded in July to the Tribe, which put him back in the bullpen.

It's good that the tribe has options for starters, but beyond Cliff and Fausto the options are all long shots.
