Kiffin loses job in feud with owner; Steelers running back hurt
Published on Wednesday, Oct 01, 2008
Associated Press
The Oakland Raiders fired Lane Kiffin on Tuesday just four games into his second season, ending a public feud with owner Al Davis. Kiffin had a 5-15 record since being hired last year, losing his final game 28-18 on Sunday to San Diego. The Raiders promoted offensive line coach Tom Cable, 43, to interim head coach. Steelers banged up
With Willie Parker and Rashard Mendenhall injured and out, the Pittsburgh Steelers are down to one healthy running back, Mewelde Moore, who had only one carry in the first three games. Carey Davis, the fullback, also has a sprained ankle and might not play Sunday night against Jacksonville. The injuries could force the Steelers (3-1) to sign former backup running backs Najeh Davenport and Gary Russell.
Bengals sign back
Running back Cedric Benson signed Tuesday with the Cincinnati Bengals, who needed another runner and were undeterred by two alcohol-related arrests in Texas that prompted the Chicago Bears to let him go. Benson will take the spot of running back DeDe Dorsey, who was placed on injured reserve Tuesday after hurting his hamstring in a 20-12 loss to the Browns. Chris Perry is the team's starting running back. Benson was Chicago's first-round pick in the 2005 draft out of Texas. He started 12 games for the Bears from 2005-07, running for 1,593 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Bulger back as QB
Marc Bulger is the St. Louis Rams' starting quarterback again in one of Jim Haslett's first moves as their new coach. Backup Trent Green started Sunday's 31-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Scott Linehan's final game as coach. Bulger was back with the starters in practice Tuesday. Haslett, who was elevated from defensive coordinator Monday, says Bulger will be the starter the rest of the season. The winless Rams have a bye this week.
McGahee hurts ribs
Baltimore Ravens running back Willis McGahee has a rib injury and his status for the Ravens game against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday is unclear. McGahee suffered the injury during the Ravens' 23-20 overtime loss Monday night against the Steelers.
Texans make moves
The Houston Texans placed safety C.C. Brown on injured reserve and signed fullback Cecil Sapp on Tuesday. Brown broke his arm against Jacksonville on Sunday and had surgery on Monday. Also, Houston signed linebacker Kevis Coley to the practice squad and released tight end Clark Harris.
