Browns have a week to get their bearings
Just what doctor ordered

Victory over Bengals has players in better frame of mind as wounds heal and batteries recharge

By Patrick McManamon
Beacon Journal sports columnist

BEREA: NFL bye weeks are about two things: Getting healthy and getting your bearings.

The Browns will try to accomplish both this week, and they get to do it coming off a victory against the Cincinnati Bengals.

It does not matter that it was not a pretty win or a well-played win. At this point, all that matters is that it was a win.

As they say, in the N-F-of-L any win is a good win.

Which means the Browns can get their bearings in a little better frame of mind. Sort of like a ship's captain. It's easier to get your bearings in calm seas than rocky ones.

Something like that.

As they look forward, the Browns' main challenge is their offense.

It is not close to the unit that was so prolific a year ago.

Derek Anderson's passer rating is a meager 49.9, and he has completed just 49.6 percent of his passes. Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow have one touchdown each, and Jamal Lewis is averaging 3.4 yards per carry.

Missed practice time in the preseason because of injuries, and an injury that has kept receiver Donte' Stallworth from the field have combined to hamper the unit.

Too, defenses are very aware what the Browns want to do with the ball.

''They want to take Braylon and I out of the game, and they're daring us to run,'' Winslow said Wednesday. ''We're getting a lot of seven-man boxes and a lot of two-safeties.''

Defenses are playing the Browns with safeties deep, lining a linebacker up over Winslow and saying they will not change until the Browns force them to change.

Winslow said teams are playing Cover-4 and Cover-2, meaning four defensive backs lined up across the field deep, or two deep with corners laying off the line.

The concept isn't complex. The secondary plays deep to take away the big play. It has been the key to Tony Dungy's success for years with the Tampa Bay Bucs and Indianapolis Colts. It forces the offense to be patient and take the long, slow route to scores.

Running the ball

The conventional way to beat the four-deep or two-deep is well known as well: Run the ball and force the defense to bring a safety closer to the line. That opens up the field deep.

The Browns used this strategy against the Bengals.

Lewis ran the ball 25 times, and offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski called a run on every play of the opening drive.

The first three games, the Browns had thrown on 61 percent of their plays.

Against the Bengals, they ran 40 times and threw 24. That helped the offense establish an attitude, led by the punishing lead blocking of fullback Lawrence Vickers.

Can a team that last season built its success on the big play down the field adjust to make the run the focal point?

They might have to — at least in the short term.

Clearly the Browns have the personnel for it. Lewis wants to run the ball 30 times a game. The offensive line has plenty of ability.

And Vickers might be General Manager Phil Savage's best and most underrated draft pick.

In Cincinnati, Vickers was (to use the vernacular) blowing up Bengals defenders left and right. He started the game by pancaking linebacker Keith Rivers on the first play, then added several more as the game went on.

''I kind of lost count after the first couple,'' he said. ''It was what I was waiting to get a chance to do.''

Vickers is a potential Lorenzo Neal — a bruising 16-year veteran fullback — with the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.

Would he like to adjust to running the ball more as an offense?

''Whatever it takes to win,'' Vickers said.

Would Anderson?

''If we win, and we have to run the ball 40 times, I'm with it every time,'' Anderson said.

Running success

The Browns will not abandon the big play by turning more to the run. They will, though, help themselves complete more big plays, because running successfully will force teams out of the coverages that have slowed the offense.

And if they actually get Stallworth on the field and he produces, the offense will be that much better.

In football, it's said that when a player or a team struggles, he or it should return to the basics, to the fundamentals.

There's nothing more fundamental in football than running the ball.

In other Browns matters:

• Anderson dismissed what looked like a sideline discussion between he and Edwards as no issue. TV cameras caught the discussion, which also involved Lewis. ''There was no argument whatsoever,'' Anderson said. ''I just mentioned to [Edwards] about being smart, getting the personal foul [Edwards had just been penalized]. He and I were talking. He wasn't yelling at me. Nothing was going on.''

• Several players will not practice this week because of injuries. Among them: safety Sean Jones (knee), defensive tackle Shaun Rogers (shoulder), offensive tackle Kevin Shaffer (concussion), defensive lineman Shaun Smith (hand), Winslow (knee) and running back Jason Wright (knee). Tight end Martin Rucker, linebacker Willie McGinest and Stallworth returned to practice.

• Coach Romeo Crennel said the odds of Jones facing the New York Giants on Oct. 13 are not good. He also said wide receiver Joe Jurevicius is still a ways away from trying to practice. Jurevicius is trying to return from an offseason staph infection in his knee.

Is Rob Chudzinski thinking clearly? Pounding the ball with Jamal Lewis should come in the 2nd half. A fresher Lewis is more likely to break loose when the defenses are a little winded. Why would you want to wear him out in the 1st half ? Mixing in a few screen passes can take some pressure off the running and passing game. Vickers and Lewis are perfect for screen passes. Come on Rob.....think

I'm hoping the Browns O-coordinator knows a little more about football than we do. Then again, it is the Browns.

i am getting veeeerrrry close to saying, "who cares?" i am staring at my office wall right now, at the color schedule printed off of the Browns website, and thinking loss(NYG), loss(WASH), loss(JAX). Does anyone thinking objectively really believe that the Browns will win one of those games?

Steve... The reason you want to pound it in the 1st half is to keep the opposing defense honest. If you don't pound it in the 1st half the opposing defense will not respect the run and drop 5-6 guys back into coverage. We'll be playing catch up the 2nd half and won't have time to run it. That's what happened in the 1st three games. I'm absolutely convinced we could have won at least two of those three losses had we not abandoned the run. Not to mention, you would have seen more play action and more successful pass plays as well. It seems simple and it is! Pat hit it on the head. when you run you win! It's as simple as that. Especially when you have a RB like ours - J. Lew. I would personally like to see more of J. Lew and Harrison together in the backfield. We would absolutely dominate! Harrison wouldn't even have to "block", or "pick up blitzes". Just having him in the back field is going to draw alot of attention to defenses... and if they don't respect him they will after he breaks off a couple 10 - 20 yard runs. I'm surprised Chud hasn't gone to that yet. Why do you think teams like the Steelers are consistantly so good? Because they run first to set up the pass. Every single aspect of running the football is good!

As the great Specer Davis Group and Robben Ford always say... "Keep On Running"!!!

PS... This really doesn't have anything to do with this article, but i've always found that when you, (fans and writers alike), focus on positives it creates positive energy, and that's how our team will play. It'll rub off on them and come across in their actions. It's unfortunately true about negative energy as well, so since i'm referencing Blues and Jazz artists in this response, let us all follow the words of the great Al Jarreau and "Accentuate The Positive"

The Browns will win only 2 of their next 6 making them 3 and 7. THis year is done. Schedule is way too hard. The defense is still a sieve, and has problems stopping anyone. Anderson is confused, but has a great arm. The offensive line is the story this year, they are not blocking well enough, THAT IS THE PROBLEM.

Posted by John 08:54 AM, 10/03/2008

Bernard, you're way off dude!!! Get your facts straight before you post. The Browns are 10th in the NFL in "total defense"!

Not to mention, offense has only stuttered because of injuries and lack of preseason play with starters due to injury.

Anderson is starting to come around as is Edwards. Those two will be on fire once our REAL second threat at wide reciever comes back - Stallworth. and Jurevicious will be back week 7 or 8. We have a dominating run game that wasn't even utilized until last week against Cinci.

These things together, plus our always improving defense will lead us to the playoffs. Watch and see!

Our division is banged up. Keep in mind they have the same if not a tougher schedule than us. We shouldn't have any problems winning the remaining 3 divisional games. Pittsburgh is in a world of hurt - they're down to their 3rd running back on the depth chart. They're missing two key offensive linemen and Big Ben on pace for over 60 sacks this year! Cinci is just unorganized from the front office to player personnel and can't win a game to save their lives. Baltimore has an awesome defense but absolutely no offence, no QB and just lost their starting running back - McGahee. You beat Baltimore by wearing down their defense, keeping them on the field with a double running threat, (Lewis & Harrison). As for the rest of our schedule, Jacksonville is banged up, Indi - banged up and ego destroyed. Broncos, Texans, colts all near the bottom in run defense. Broncos, Jaguars, Redskins all near the bottom in pass defense.

There are alot of holes and there's alot of season left. The Browns are coming back and it's all starting with the run. We will win our division!

GO BROWNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
