The Summit County Sports Hall of Fame will induct its 52nd class in ceremonies at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Tangier restaurant in Akron.
Members of the Class of 2008 are: Marvin Beal, Jim Boeke, Brian Hallett, Frank Longstreth, Calvin Moore, Dick Paige, William Reppa, Harry Reynolds and winners of two special awards: G. Thomas Floyd Jr. and Dan Hayes.
Floyd will receive the organization's Andy Palich Service Award. Hayes will receive the Phil Dietrich Senior Athlete Award.
Banquet tickets, at $35 each, are available at the Firestone Federal Credit Union, 1200 Firestone Parkway, Akron. For more information, call 330-379-6400 or 800-648-3328.
Here are brief biographies for the special award recipients:
• Floyd actively has been involved in organized sports in the area since the early 1960s.
He entered the University of Akron in 1962 and became the men's basketball manager, a position he held until graduation in 1966. He then joined the Akron Public Schools as a physical education teacher assigned to King Elementary. He remained there for his entire 36-year teaching career, also teaching part time at Fairlawn, Essex, McEbright and Jackson.
Floyd coached 24 seasons on the high school and junior high levels, involving boys and girls basketball, baseball and softball. He also volunteered for 30 years with the West Akron Baseball League as a coach and umpire.
• Hayes has been involved in competitive athletics since his freshman year at Central High School in 1938. He lettered four years there on the track team, a talent he continued at the University of Akron for four years, earning MVP awards as a junior and senior.
Upon graduation, he entered the education field, serving as a teacher, counselor, principal, administrator and track official. In 2005, he received a 50-year service award for his officiating and continues to volunteer for City Series, district and regional meets.
In 1987, he became a charter member in the Silver Softball League as player/manager. His teams have won five titles in the 70-plus division. With the Brennan White Hats softball team in Senior Olympics 70-plus competition, Hayes played with one national champion (2005) and one national runner-up (2007).
