Mogadore 38, Streetsboro 35
Big victory is a kick for Wildcats

Stewart gets retribution with decisive field goal in win over Streetsboro

By Fred Cay
Special to the Beacon Journal

MOGADORE: This one lived up to its billing and then some.

Mogadore's relentless running game against Streetsboro's big-play passing attack. And for Mogadore's Shayne Stewart, it was sweet retribution two years later. For Streetsboro, only disappointment.

It came down to two field-goal attempts at the end. Stewart made his. Streetsboro could not, and Mogadore (7-0, 4-0) prevailed in an exciting 38-35 battle in the Portage Trail County Division.

''That's the most adrenaline rush I've ever had in my life,'' said Stewart, whose 32-yard kick put the Wildcats ahead with 1:12 left in the game. ''I have not been involved in a game like that in a long time.''

He and the Wildcats were involved in such a game two years earlier on the same field against the same team. And Stewart missed from virtually the same distance in the same situation, as Mogadore lost a 35-33 heartbreaker to Streetsboro.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pounder who is a stellar defensive end, too, emerged as the hero this time. Unfortunately for Streetsboro (5-2, 3-1), its kick missed from 34 yards as the game ended.

The Wildcat defenders were probably exhausted from chasing Streetsboro's Carrington Hanna, who threw four touchdown passes and might have just run out of time driving from his own 23 in that final minute.

''He is the toughest quarterback we have ever played against,'' Stewart said.

Hanna, a 6-1, 195-pound senior, completed 16-of-25 passes for 241 yards and often scrambled out of trouble to make big plays.

''I sort of made up my mind we were going to go for the field goal,'' Mogadore coach Matt Adorni said. ''We were in no rush to throw the ball because I was hoping to run out the clock.''

Mogadore, the lone remaining undefeated PTC team, now has three more league games to play as the Wildcats seek to defend their conference crown.

''There is a lot of football left to play, but we control our own destiny,'' Adorni said.

In contrast to Streetsboro, the Wildcats passed only when necessary and scored on long, time-consuming drives. Kodey Chance and Mike Leymon rushed for two touchdowns, and two-way standout Jake McAvinew added another.

''I will not put it on the kids,'' Streetsboro coach John Arlesic said. ''I need to do a better job. We lost for a whole bunch of different reasons, and it all comes down to me.''

Chance, who gained 169 yards on 17 carries, ran a counter play 23 yards for the first touchdown three plays after a fumble on Streetsboro's first offensive play. Chance then plunged over from the 1 to complete a six-play, 62-yard drive on the Wildcats' next possession for a 14-0 lead with 5:46 left in the first quarter.

Streetsboro responded. Dan Spindler scored from 8 yards out, and following Mike Oktavec's recovery of a Mogadore fumble, Cory Lanterman caught a 33-yard pass from Hanna to tie it 14-14 with 10:46 left in the half.

Leymon's 6-yard touchdown run was answered by Hanna's 23-yard touchdown pass to Robert Wilson with 1:28 left in the half for a 21-21 tie.

The two teams traded scores in the second half, though Mogadore never trailed. Hanna threw for touchdowns of 17 yards to Wilson and 6 yards to Lanterman, the latter tying it 35-35 with 5:15 left. McAvinew raced for a 35-yard touchdown for Mogadore in between those two Rocket scores.
