Warriors suspend Ellis for 30 games

Guard's moped crash violates contract

Associated Press

The Golden State Warriors suspended injured guard Monta Ellis for 30 games without pay Saturday for violating his new contract by getting into a moped accident.

Ellis, who agreed to a six-year deal worth $66 million in July, severely sprained his ankle in a low-speed crash in late August. The suspension will cost the guard slightly less than $3 million.

The Warriors counted four preseason games as part of the suspension, which means Ellis can't return to the club until after Golden State's 26th regular-season game, against Indiana on Dec. 17.

Ellis, who recently underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament, was unlikely to return before then anyway, but the suspension means the guard won't be paid during his absence. Ellis' agent met with Golden State officials to settle the punishment.

Ellis compounded his mistake by initially lying to the Warriors about the accident. He told Chris Mullin, the Warriors' top basketball executive, that he hurt himself playing pickup ball, but came clean about the accident several days later.

More NBA: Heat's injuries mount

• Heat center Jamaal Magloire will miss at least six weeks with a broken left hand, and could be sidelined even longer if surgery is required to repair the fracture. Magloire was injured in Miami's preseason overtime loss against New Jersey on Thursday.

Soccer: U.S. advances, beats Cuba

DaMarcus Beasley scored a pair of first-half goals, Landon Donovan and Brian Ching padded the lead early in the second, and the United State routed Cuba 6-1 Saturday in Washington. Jozy Altidore and Oguchi Onyewu added goals for the United States in the final minutes as the game got sloppy and the Cubans tired. With two semifinal-round matches remaining, the Americans (4-0) already have secured a berth in next year's six-nation finals of the North and Central American and Caribbean region. The top three teams in the finals qualify for the 2010 World Cup, and the No. 4 nation goes to a playoff against the fifth-place team in South America for another berth.

NFL: Newman still out after surgery

• Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman will be out at least another month after surgery for a sports hernia. That means Adam ''Pacman'' Jones will remain in the starting lineup — at least for today's game against Arizona. Newman missed the preseason and the season opener because of a groin injury. He then played in three games before he was hurt again in practice last week. The earliest he is likely to return is mid-November.

• The Bengals signed Dave Rayner, giving them another kicker with Shayne Graham hampered by a sore groin. Graham didn't practice on Thursday or Friday and is listed as questionable for today's game at the New York Jets.

Cars: Pedregon tops qualifying

Cruz Pedregon bolstered his flickering championship aspirations at the Virginia NHRA Nationals, taking the No. 1 qualifying position in Funny Car with a 4.041-second run at 306.88 mph. in Dinwiddie, Va. Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) also topped their divisions in the 22nd of 24 NHRA POWERade Series races this season and the fourth race in the six-race NHRA Playoff, the Countdown to 1.

Tennis: Monfils vs. Petzschner in final

Gael Monfils and Philipp Petzschner reached the final of the BA Tennis Trophy in Vienna, Austria. Eighth-seeded Monfils defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (2) and qualifier Petzschner rallied to stop 2004 champion Feliciano Lopez 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

• Top-ranked Jelena Jankovic rallied from a set down to cruise into the final of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow with a 0-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory over defending champion Elena Dementieva.

• Top-seeded David Nalbandian and Robin Soderling routed their opponents to reach the Stockholm Open final in Sweden.

College: Illnois holds outdoor practice

• The Illinois men's and women's basketball teams got an early start to their seasons, holding what they called the world's largest outdoor basketball practice on a portable court at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Ill. It's unlikely they'll be able to repeat it, though. The NCAA is expected to ban such early events after coaches at other schools complained.

Golf: Price eyes win in Senior Players

• Golfer Nick Price moved into position for his first win on the Champions Tour, shooting a bogey-free 66 to take a 1-shot lead over D.A. Weibring after three rounds of the Senior Players Championship in Timonium, Md.

• Argentina's Ricardo Gonzalez shot a 9-under 62 to trail South Africa's Charl Schwartzel by 1 stroke after the third round of the Madrid Masters in Spain.

Boxing: Klitschko takes WBC title

• Boxer Vitali Klitschko reclaimed the WBC belt and fulfilled a self-proclaimed dream to hold a heavyweight title at the same time as his brother, stopping Samuel Peter in eight rounds in Berlin.
