Browns' offense M.I.A. in D.C. Rally falls short in loss to Redskins

LANDOVER, MD.: Through three quarters, the Browns' Monday night magic from a week ago looked like a Monday night mirage.
But when the Washington Redskins took an 11-point lead with 12:28 remaining Sunday, the Browns' offense got its mojo back.
A furious finish came up just short. Phil Dawson's 54-yard field-goal attempt that would have tied the game with 25 seconds remaining sailed wide right, and the Redskins held on for a 14-11 victory at FedExField.
''Kicking a million balls in my life, you can feel it one way or the other before you look up and that one felt like it might be a little right,'' Dawson said. ''Distance, on that particular kick, I wasn't worried. But it's distance and line, and I only got half of it right.''
After rolling up 454 yards against the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants, the Browns' offense crawled back into its hole. It finished with only 236 yards (121 through three quarters), and went 4-of-16 on third down. Quarterback Derek Anderson, coming off a 310-yard effort, completed 14-of-37 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown for a 57.9 rating. He completed 1-of-8 for 6 yards in the first quarter.
''The way the defense played today, they deserved to win,'' wide receiver Braylon Edwards said. ''It would have been stealing on the offensive side of the ball, but it would have been deserving on the defensive side.''
The Browns (2-4) came in with a two-game winning streak and hoped they had turned around their season with the nationally televised 35-14 triumph over the Giants. But the
big-play ability displayed that night and last season was nowhere to be found. Edwards dropped four passes, though one was nullified by penalty, and caught four for 58 yards. Tight end Kellen Winslow returned after sitting out the Giants game with an undisclosed illness, but caught only two passes for 17 yards.
''We missed a lot of plays today,'' Edwards said. ''I dropped a lot of passes and I didn't help my team. By the time I made a play, it was just too late.
''Everybody was a little out of rhythm early on. I think we might have underestimated the Redskins. We missed some things early and it leads to frustration. It caused me to be frustrated and lose my head.''
Anderson was just as disappointed.
''To be 0-0 in the first half was pretty bad,'' he said. ''We crossed the 50 three times in the first half and didn't get even a field goal. That's frustrating.''
As bad as it was, the Browns had a chance even after a fourth-quarter drive to the Redskins' 1 came away with no points. On the Redskins' next play from scrimmage, cornerback Eric Wright grabbed Clinton Portis' right arm and forced the league's rushing leader to fumble after a 24-yard gain. Free safety Brodney Pool recovered at the Redskins' 29.
The Browns scored five plays later with Joshua Cribbs getting the first offensive touchdown of his career on a 1-yard reception on fourth down. Anderson hit Edwards on the 2-point conversion to close the gap to 14-11 with 2:44 to go.
The Browns stopped the Redskins on three downs, all Portis runs, and got the ball back at their 29 with 1:51 remaining. The last-gasp rally was not a model of efficiency, however.
Anderson hit Donte' Stallworth for an 18-yard gain and found Winslow for 9 more to the Redskins' 39. On second-and-1, Anderson's sneak gained 3 yards, but he did not quickly spike the ball to stop the clock. Instead he threw incomplete to Winslow, setting up second-and-10 from the Redskins' 36 with 41 seconds left.
''I was doing what I'm told,'' Anderson said. ''The headset wasn't working; it went out five or six times. They gave me a play and I rolled with it.''
At the end, Anderson tried two consecutive passes to Edwards that both fell incomplete. The first wasn't close, as Edwards looked like he failed to turn around.
''That was the only pressure they brought all day,'' Edwards said. ''It was my job to pick up that 'hot' like I did against the Giants, and I missed it. I thought I was open on something else. D.A. saw it. That's my fault.''
On the second, the ball was low.
''I probably could have gotten it up a little bit, give him chance to make it,'' Anderson said.
''Another step, another inch, I probably make that catch and give Phil a better chance to make that kick,'' Edwards said. ''We just didn't get it. That's kind of how we were all day, just inches away on a lot of things.''

DA is full of excuses-any consistency was left on the field from last Monday nights game-BQ is now grinning-when is it TIME to let him put a run on the clock?tick tock, tick tock...
The Browns were not very well prepared for this game. RC should be arrensted for imposing as a head football coach. I listened to the Redskins radio broadcast post game show, and to a man they thought the Browns offensive play and the coaching of RC were inept. If Brady Quinn is not the announced quarterback next week, RC should be fired immediately. Another "wait another year" for the Browns.
The players are a direct reflection of big ole RC. As well D.A. was as bad Sunday as he was good last Monday night.
crennelephant is running wild!
DA has shown us one good performance over the past 12 games counting preseason, last two game last season, and the first 6 this season.
He is not a leader, vickers proved that by the altercation on the field. It was pure kaos.
The defense on the other hand turned in one hell of a game and will get no credit. I's sure it makes them want to come out and play hard next week. You know, instead of slacking too and collecting their fat checks.
Put in BQ...
Braylyn INEPTWORDS. Romeo, Remeo wher fore arte thou?????? Bags packed Kill Belapuke is waiting for "EWE"......
Quarterbacks are supposed to be leaders, Anderson is not this team's leader. Case in point, Vickers reaction to Anderson on the field. A respected leader would not be brushed away like that in in front of the whole stadium.
Edwards may have been "credited" with four drops, but only one of those was even remotely catchable. Anderson is good at two things: throwing the ball really hard no matter how long the pass is and leading his receivers right into big hits from the defense. Romeo just may have sealed his fate with another case of bad game management and decision making when he failed call for a field goal attempt on 4th down inside the 10 yesterday. It just shows how little he understands about giving the team a chance to win.
Time to fire Crennel and start BQ. The Browns season is over for this year. 3 games behind the Steelers and fading fast. I really though Romeo would start BQ in the 2nd half after the dismal offensive prformance in the first half.
This season is over, start playing the young guys and build something for "next year."
Braylon needs to drink 2 of his energy drinks and maybe he would catch a pass.
Oh well, GO CAVS!!!!!!
I find it increasingly difficult to support this team. My respect for Coach Crennel's ability to get this team ready to play has vanished. Everyone can get up for a Monday nighter after a bye week, it's the routine weeks that have me baffled.
Advise to Brayon Edwards: Shut up and do your job!!!! or become an analyst and collect a paycheck for running your mouth. PS. Brady is NOT the answer to this teams woes.
So the real Browns show up against the Skins. As I said, Monday was a mirage and the BQ era needs to begin this season for better or worse. The coach, offensive play caller need fired and DA needs benched. He would be an exceptional backup but nothing else
I just wonder how the previous Monday the offensive play calling was creative and worked...so why back to the same thing that hasn't worked. Crennel and Anderson...Pathetic.
Hahahahahahahahaha!!!!! Cleveland sucks!!!! Go Steelers!!!! Hahahahahahahahaha!!!
Put the blame on the offensive offense.DA"s mechanics are causing his ineptness. He's too statuesque and flatfooted in the pocket, ergo the batted down passes at the line and the errant throws. It'ds time to give the kid(BQ) a chance at QB,couldn't hurt.I agree the Vickers incident does undermine DA's control of the players.
As i said weeks ago (pats self on back )Anderson stares at his receivers before he throws to them ,good linemen and linebackers know to watch a QBs eyes !That is why the receivers get their clocks cleaned and linemen bat down his passes all day . He is 6ft,6in.for cripes sake why do you think his passes never get past the line of scrimmage? This is the NFL people,a QB has to be able to maneuver and look one way and then throw the other .We need to put Quinn in there to see if he can do this or if not trade for someone who can .Why wait till next year to find this out?
the swagger is back !!!!
A 2-3 team has no business underestimating anybody, especially a team with a winning record.
Nicholas! uh, NO!
The STAGGER is back!!!
Braylon Edwards sucks a fat one. Bench his worthless behind. 5 drops, and 4 of them hit him either in the hands or in the numbers. Inexcuseable.
Derek... jeez... we need to give Quinn a shot ASAP! It's not like our O-line could look WORSE!!!
The Cleveland Browns are the epitome of ineptitude from the head coach all the way to the last man on the roster. Time to clean house
Just like every season except 1 since the Browns came back into the NFL, NO PLAYOFFS FOR YOU CLOWNS - GO STEELERS !!!!
boomer esiason killing rac on his radio show this
morning regarding clock management and play calls
at the end of games. rac"s problems seem to be
obvious to everyone but browns management.
Even the inept announcers were figuring out the play calling. It is not rocket science with the Browns. Time to clean house starting with RAC and Chud. Trade DA for a bag of footballs, if you can even get that. Offer Cowher a deal he can't refuse and let him do the a s s kicking in Berea, but scrub the place down first.
Well, I think Crennel and Anderson may have to look for a new job. Quinn should join in the job search also. Perhaps, the Browns were too busy deciding on who to vote for, and forgot how to play football.
RAC can't go out and catch or throw the ball for them this loss was not his fault. i never been one to yank a QB just to yank him but dam
Anderson did look pretty bad. Edwards dropped some passes. Winslow looked out of sync, like he missed a week of practice. They had a shot at the end, but couldn't pull it off. The Defense played very well, holding the Redskins scoreless for a long time. Although they were weak against the run at times.
Surprising after that big game Monday Night. But not a big blowout loss either.
Yeah, Quinn will solve everything, because he can catch the ball to. Crennel didn't do a great job of preparing the team. I don't disagree with going for it on 4th down, kicking a FG down there at the one meant you had to drive the full length of the field again to score a TD. But the play calling wasn't good. Throw it on first down when they expect the run.
PS All you Steeler fans need to get a life. Find a forum that talks about the Steelers and post your garbage there. Big deal, you beat up on a pathetic Bengals team. Let's see how you do against teams that have actually won a game, or have a winning record.
I agree with the posts. The defense played as good as can be expected.Chud's play calling seemed predictable at times but the real problem is the lack of leadership on the sidelines and on the field.DA"s mechanics stink.
Steelers fans why don't you move to PA and get the heck out of here........atleast true Browns fans are just that - not fly by night like the Steelers.....your day is coming!
Get Romeo out of here and take DA with you.
Is anybody against trading Anderson now? I wanted to do it last Draft Day to get back into Day 1 and got chastised for it. Looks like now we can only send him to Minn or K.C. for a 5-6th rounder, if you can get that.
Why is it that common fans can evaluate talent more so than professionals. I still like Savage, but he's letting this play out way too long. He has to step in and make a decision.
Lets hope we can do better next time. I am still a Browns fan no matter what.
Good Luck on the next game.
In the words of Barack Obama, "Well look...it is time for a change." DA, the party is over. You are just not good enough to be a starting quarterback in this league...a back up for sure but not a starting quarterback at least not right now. In all fairness to DA, I really don't know who to blame for the timing miscues between Anderson and Edwards yesterday. Also, there was one play where Winslow ran a post route but DA threw to the sidelines. These are mistakes that should be made in the first 2 games of the preseason, not 6 games into the regular season. And this also reflects the kind of coaching we are getting on the sidelines. Romeo, your days are numbered. Brady, get ready!
Browns should wear their "throw back helmets"and throw out their new ones.Heck, why not? Can't hurt.
Maybe the Browns should watch films from their "glory days",let guys like the late Gene Hickerson inspire them get their mojo going.
Matt, Old Man Dump, et. al. = obnoxious Steeler fans who better hope Big Ben holds together or else....
Can anyone esplain to me why Crennel would not have gone to BQ in that game? And why he will not start this week? The Anderson experiment has failed. Now we see why Brian Billick let him go in Baltimore when they were starved for anyone who could throw. I don't understand Crennel's obsession with Anderson but it is just ridiculous now. Let's see what Quinn can do. He may not be the answer but Anderson isn't either. My sense is Quinn will bring some stability to this office and will know how to use the weapons he has.
Braylon Edwards sucks. Four dropped passes. Does this guy even practice catching footballs during the week? What the hell does he mean they may have taken the Redskins lightly. Does he even know how to read the standings? The Redskins were 4-2 before this game.
Hey Steeler fans. Let's see how your team does against the rest of the NFC East. We all know how it went against Philly
hey omg the steelers are up 3 games on us and will lose to dallas washington and giants all tied up again your so re tart it. it matters who is playing good in dec if we can keep it close.
i love my browns win or lose
