Ball State gets a slow start, then routs Eastern Michigan

Beacon Journal staff report

Nate Davis caught the first touchdown pass of his career and threw two more to help No. 20 Ball State beat Eastern Michigan 38-16 Saturday.

The Cardinals (8-0, 4-0 Mid-American), off to their best start in 43 years, struggled to score early but continued punishing their opponents with a defense that has allowed just three touchdowns in the past three games.

Eastern Michigan (2-6, 1-4), whose last game against a Top 25 team was a 55-0 loss to Michigan three years ago, averted a shutout on a 7-yard pass from Andy Schmitt to Jacory Stone on the final play of the third quarter and later got a 5-yarder from Schmitt to Tyler Jones. Schmitt finished with a career-high 309 yards passing, most after the game was long out of reach.

Davis gave the Cardinals their first touchdown in the second quarter, when he pitched the ball to freshman Briggs Orsbon and sprinted toward the sideline, where Orsbon found him open for an easy 4-yard catch and trot into the end zone. Davis, who finished with 241 yards passing, also had a 5-yard touchdown pass to Darius Hill in the third quarter and a 6-yard TD pass to Orsbon late in the period.

As a junior he already is Ball State's career passing leader in yards and touchdowns.

Ball State's MiQuale Lewis, who came in with a streak of six straight games rushing for at least 100 yards, was held to 75 yards, including a 52-yard scoring run two plays into the fourth quarter. Trey Buice finished the rout for the Cardinals with a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown midway through the final period.

Central Michigan 24, Toledo 23 — Ontario Sneed capped a 68-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run and Andrew Aguila kicked the extra point as visiting Central Michigan edged Toledo.

Toledo jumped out to a 6-0 first quarter lead with two field goals by Alex Steigerwald. But Central Michigan (6-2, 5-0 MAC) took the lead 7-6 on a 21-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dan LeFevour to Bryan Anderson.

Steigerwald brought Toledo (2-6, 1-3 MAC West) within a point in the third quarter with a 35-yard field goal. That was followed by a Nick Moore touchdown after a 35-yard pass from quarterback Aaron Opelt that put Toledo ahead 23-17. Steigerwald kicked the extra point.

N. Illinois 16, Bowling Green 13 — Junior Mike Salerno kicked a 30-yard field goal with 12 seconds to play to lift host Northern Illinois to a victory over Bowling Green.

Salerno converted on three of four field-goal tries for the day as the Huskies (5-3, 4-1 Mid-American) won their third straight and fifth in their last six games.

The Falcons (3-5, 1-3 Mid-American) led 13-10 late in the third quarter after an 18-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tyler Sheehan to wide receiver Marques Parks.

Salerno forced a 13-13 tie with 8:08 left in regulation with a 25-yard field goal. He got his final chance when defender Landon Cox blocked Nick Iovinelli's punt and set up the Huskies at the Falcon 37 with 4:51 to play.

The Huskies chewed up more than four minutes and advanced 24 yards in seven plays to set up Salerno's game-winning try.
