Team is struggling to understand 13-6 loss to No. 3 Penn State

COLUMBUS: What's brewing today with the 2008 Ohio State Buckeyes . . .
Buckeyes buzz
This is an off week for Ohio State. The Buckeyes can use the time off.
Beaten 13-6 by No. 3 Penn State on Saturday night, they looked worn down and a step slow on several big plays in the game. After the game, they struggled to grasp why they lost and what they can change in their bye week.
''Six points should have been enough for us,'' linebacker James Laurinaitis said. ''We were up 6-3 and we had to stop them. . . . We have the lead late in the game and it's your job to protect.
''We'll use this week to get healthy and to stay focused.''
Quarterback Terrelle Pryor lost two crucial turnovers in the fourth quarter, one on a fumble with 10:38 remaining that led to the only touchdown and another in the closing seconds, when the Buckeyes were scrambling to get a tying touchdown of their own.
Pryor, with an assistant coach right next to him monitoring the questions, took much of the blame as he met with reporters.
Of the last pass, picked off by Lydell Sargeant with 27 seconds left, he said, ''That throw was terrible. I didn't get enough on it. It was terrible.''
He said it was the offense's fault, but mostly it was his.
''I've never faced adversity like this,'' said Pryor, who started his sixth game since taking over for fifth-year senior Todd Boeckman. ''We didn't drive the ball down the field like we should have.''
Wide receiver Brian Robiskie defended Pryor's passing ability but also said the young quarterback would have to get over the loss.
''Terrelle can make the throws; he just needs the experience in games,'' Robiskie said. ''He's taking this hard because that's the way he is. He will just have to rebound.''
Polling place
In the latest Associated Press Top 25 media poll, the Buckeyes fell from No. 10 to No. 13. Penn State stayed at No. 3, in unbeaten lockstep with No. 1 Texas and No. 2 Alabama.
Upcoming
After the week off, the Buckeyes play at Northwestern and Illinois before closing at home against Michigan.
Bowl possibilities
Obviously, it's still extremely early and the future is murky. But imagine what would happen if Penn State and Ohio State both win out, Minnesota picks up another loss (remaining games at home against Northwestern, Michigan and Iowa and at Wisconsin) and at least one of the teams ahead of Penn State in the BCS rankings falter.
That scenario would put Penn State in the BCS title game — and the Buckeyes would end up in a rematch with Southern California in the Rose Bowl. That would be one tough sell for the bowl people, pitting those two traditional intersectional rivals, based on USC's 35-3 thumping of the Buckeyes back on Sept. 13.
Final word
Coach Jim Tressel, asked whether a 10-2 Ohio State team would be an attractive commodity come bowl season: ''We have to become an 8-2 Ohio State team first, so we're going to work to do that and keep working to get better. As I always say, you get what you deserve.''

usc can lose to teams named osu - just not at home. home field advantage does make a big difference. but the rose bowl is basically another home game for the protex, er, trojans.
If OSU gets to Pasadena.... they will get waxed again if they play USC. Why? Because their offensive line stinks. OSU falls hard against UF, LSU, USC, PSU, and evens struggles mightly against The Ohio University.
Pryor is either tentative on his passes or does not possess the arm strength to get to the next level. His passes have too much hang time and allow defenders to close and disrupt passes. Receivers were wide open in the Penn State game and the "balloon" passes allowed the defensive backs to break up the pass or caused the receiver to drop the pass. He has a lot of talent and strong desire, he'll get better and OSU will be back strong next year.
