Roddick in Masters Cup tourney
Published on Friday, Oct 31, 2008
From Beacon Journal wire services
Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer rolled into the Paris Masters quarterfinals without the ousted Novak Djokovic on Thursday.
Fourth-ranked Andy Murray, Andy Roddick, defending champion David Nalbandian and 2006 winner Nikolay Davydenko also made the last eight.
Roddick claimed the sixth spot in the eight-man Masters Cup in Shanghai next month, leaving Juan Martin del Potro and Gilles Simon waiting on today's results to see if they keep the last two berths.
Nadal beat Gael Monfils of France 6-3, 6-2, Federer defeated Marin Cilic of Croatia 6-3, 6-4, while Djokovic, the year's other major winner, lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
Nadal saved all nine break points he faced and broke Monfils three times, clinching victory on his first match point when the Frenchman hit a forehand wide.
Nadal will play Davydenko, who crushed 2005 champion Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-1.

Football: Clemson runner returns
• Injured Clemson running back C.J. Spiller is expected to return to action against Boston College. Spiller pulled his hamstring in the opening half against Wake Forest on Oct. 9 and has not played since. The Tigers lost to Wake Forest and Georgia Tech in his absence.
• Florida State receiver Corey Surrency will miss Saturday's game at Georgia Tech for disciplinary reasons. It's the second time in as many weeks that coach Bobby Bowden has suspended a receiver. Freshman Bert Reed missed last Saturday's win over Virginia Tech for skipping classes. No reason was given for Surrency's suspension.
Golf: Price, Eger share early lead
• Nick Price made a 25-foot putt on the 18th hole to pull even with David Eger at 6-under 66 atop the leaderboard in the opening round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Sonoma, Calif.
• Soren Kjeldsen of Denmark shot a 6-under 65 for a 3-stroke lead after the first round of the Volvo Masters in Sotogrande, Spain, and Lee Westwood surged ahead in the chase for the Order of Merit title. Sergio Garcia finished with a 68 to finish second on a windy day at Valderrama. Westwood was one of only six players to finish under par after a 70 put him 3 strokes ahead of Order of Merit leader Robert Karlsson and longshot Miguel Angel Jimenez. Karlsson initially struggled with his putter but rallied for a 73.
Other: Web site spews racism
• Formula One title favorite Lewis Hamilton has been the target of racist messages at a Web site aimed at promoting his failure in the decisive Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday. The Web site http://www.pinchalaruedadehamilton.com (or Burst Hamilton's Tires) asks visitors to place images of pins, nails and porcupines on the Interlagos track to try to keep F1's first black driver from finishing Sunday's race.
• State racing officials say the winner of last month's All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs has tested positive for caffeine. That could jeopardize the $1 million purse won by the owner of Stolis Winner. If the finding is upheld by the New Mexico Racing Commission, Jerry Windham of College Station, Texas, could be required to return the purse.
• Jacques Rogge formally announced his candidacy for another term as IOC president, vowing to build on four successful Olympics under his stewardship and fight against drug cheats and childhood obesity.

• David Beckham will join AC Milan in January on a three-month loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy to maintain his fitness and prolong his England career. The former England captain's brief Serie A career will begin Jan. 7, but he will rejoin his Galaxy teammates in March.
