Ex-Tribe ace likely to exceed Santana
Published on Saturday, Nov 15, 2008
Free-agent season opened Friday with the New York Yankees planning to give C.C. Sabathia a record offer for a pitcher.
The Yankees formulated a proposal to the big lefty that would exceed Johan Santana's $137.5 million, six-year contract with the New York Mets both in total and average, a baseball official familiar with the negotiations said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to divulge details.
Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner confirmed Friday night at the team's spring training complex in Tampa, Fla., that an offer was made to Sabathia, and that proposals will be forthcoming for pitchers A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe.
''Yes,'' Steinbrenner said when asked if an offer was made to Sabathia. ''And we're prepared to make offers to Burnett and Lowe.''
Sabathia went a combined 17-10 for the Indians and Milwaukee Brewers this year after winning the 2007 AL Cy Young Award, and is considered the best starting pitcher in this year's free-agent class.
Other top free-agent starters are likely will wait for Sabathia to set the price for pitchers.
More baseball: Dodgers raise prices
• Forget Dodger Blue. This is Dodger Green — as in $90 for a spring training ticket. That's what the Los Angeles Dodgers will charge for 692 top seats at their new spring home in Glendale, Ariz. Last year, their highest-priced exhibition ticket was $20 at Vero Beach, Fla.
Golf: Stanford takes 2-stroke lead
• Angela Stanford shot a 6-under 66 in the second round of the Lorena Ochoa Invitational to take a 2-stroke lead over LPGA Championship winner Yani Tseng in Guadalajara, Mexico. Stanford had a 10-under 134 total on the Guadalajara Country Club course. Tseng, No. 2 in the world behind Ochoa, shot her second consecutive 68. Ochoa followed her opening 73 with a 71 on her home course, leaving her 10 strokes behind.
• Ernie Els of South Africa and England's Simon Dyson shared a 2-stroke lead at the Singapore Open with play delayed for a second day because of rain. Els, who lost this tournament in a playoff in 2006 before missing the cut last year, was on the course early to complete his first-round 66 and then re-emerged to shoot a 70 in his second round to move to 6-under at the halfway mark.
• Golf legend Seve Ballesteros is likely to be released from intensive care next week after brain surgery on a malignant tumor in Madrid, Spain. La Paz hospital said in a statement that Ballesteros' condition ''continues to improve.''
Colleges: FSU suspends five receivers
• Five Florida State wide receivers will miss tonight's homecoming game against Boston College for their roles in a midweek campus fight, coach Bobby Bowden said. Taiwan Easterling, Bert Reed, Corey Surrency, Cameron Wade and Richard Goodman will sit out the crucial Atlantic Coast Conference game. It's the seventh game this season that the Seminoles (7-2, 4-2 ACC) will be without suspended players.
• Two West Virginia football players facing battery charges have been indefinitely suspended from the team. Coach Bill Stewart announced the suspensions of 21-year-old running back Maxwell Anderson and 21-year-old special teams holder Jeremy Kash.
• Jantel Lavender recovered from a slow start to score 20 points and grab 19 rebounds, leading No. 18 Ohio State to a 75-56 win over visiting Butler. Freshman Samantha Prahalis added 14 points in her debut. Andrea Walker came off the bench to score 13 points and Star Alled had 10.
• North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams said senior Bobby Frasor might miss today's opener against Penn, another key injury for a team that will likely be without reigning national player of the year Tyler Hansbrough and top defender Marcus Ginyard. Frasor sprained his left ankle Monday.
Tennis: Murray defeats Federer again
• Defending champion Roger Federer was eliminated from the Masters Cup with a 4-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5 loss to Andy Murray, one of those rare players with a winning record against the Swiss star. Federer, a four-time winner of the season-ending tournament, appeared to be bothered by a sore back that forced him to withdraw during the Paris Masters two weeks ago. Federer received treatment from the trainer three times during the match in Shanghai, China. Murray, who had his left hand iced during the match, will play Nikolay Davydenko in the semifinals. Federer's loss allowed Gilles Simon to advance and play Novak Djokovic.
Autos: Benson wins NASCAR truck title
• A two-tire stop and a late decision to stay on track during a caution period were just enough to give Johnny Benson the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series title by seven points over Ron Hornaday in a race that went to overtime in Homestead, Fla. Todd Bodine won the Ford 200, but all eyes were on the championship contenders as Hornaday tried desperately to make up ground after falling behind in the pits during the final caution at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Benson, who came into the race with a three-point lead, finished seventh, one position ahead of Hornaday after the dramatic green-white-checker finish.
