Barry Melrose's return to the NHL as coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning lasted 16 games. Now the job belongs to assistant Rick Tocchet.
Melrose was fired Friday less than five months after he left the television booth to coach a team that finished with the league's worst record last season.
General Manager Brian Lawton said it was a tough decision, but the team's results were unacceptable. The Lightning have a record of 5-7-4.
Tocchet was promoted to interim head coach. He was sentenced to two years' probation in August 2007 after pleading guilty in a gambling investigation into a sports betting ring. Tocchet said he never bet on NHL games.
POCK SUSPENDED New York Islanders defenseman Thomas Pock was suspended for five games without pay for elbowing Ottawa Senators forward Ryan Shannon the previous night. His salary of $17,944 for the five games will go to the NHL players' emergency assistance fund.
AROUND THE ICE Vancouver Canucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa is expected to miss two weeks with a broken foot. Veteran Rob Davison will take Bieksa's spot in the lineup today against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Canucks also recalled defenseman Lawrence Nycholat from a conditioning stint in the AHL. The Canucks also expect forward Pavol Demitra back today after he missed 10 games because of rib cartilage he injured in a game Oct. 19. . . . The Minnesota Wild activated right wing Owen Nolan from injured reserve. Nolan missed eight of the past 11 games with a leg injury. The Wild sent center Krys Kolanos to their AHL affiliate in Houston. The Wild are still without star Marian Gaborik. His injured groin has kept him off the ice for 12 consecutive games.

Melrose was the best Hockey analyst on TV and I was sorry he took the TB job, hopefully he returns to ESPN where he belongs.
