Cardinals star backs St. Louis group
Published on Wednesday, Nov 19, 2008
Associated Press
St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols is adding his star power to a group working to bring an MLS expansion team to the city.
The announcement on Tuesday comes a day after Pujols won his second National League Most Valuable Player award. Pujols' reputation, plus a significant financial investment that was not disclosed, is expected to boost St. Louis Soccer United's chances of winning a franchise in 2011.
''I am very proud and excited to join the effort to bring Major League Soccer to the St. Louis area,'' Pujols said in a statement. ''This means a lot to me and my family, as we all love soccer and we believe in MLS.''
Seven cities are competing for two expansion teams with selections expected by the end of March. Also applying were Vancouver, Montreal, Atlanta, Miami, Ottawa and Portland.
More soccer: Uruguay suspends play
• Uruguay suspended soccer in all divisions until further notice, a day after more than 100 fans fought with sticks and metal on the field. The violence came after a game between top-division teams Danubio and Nacional. The fight at Danubio's stadium lasted several minutes before riot police intervened.
Golf: Ballesteros out of ICU
• Seve Ballesteros has been released from intensive care following brain surgery on a malignant tumor. Madrid's La Paz hospital said the 51-year-old golf great would remain in the hospital for rehab. Ballesteros had three operations in 18 days. There was no timetable for his release.
• The LPGA Tour will not be visiting Tulsa in 2009 for the first time in eight years after it was unable to find a replacement for bankrupt title sponsor SemGroup. The LPGA has played in the Tulsa area since 2001, when the tournament was sponsored by the energy company Williams and held at the Tulsa Country Club. It moved to Cedar Ridge Country Club in suburban Broken Arrow in 2004 and was sponsored by hotelier John Q. Hammons for three years before SemGroup, another energy company, took over as the title sponsor in 2007.
Football: Texas names next coach
• Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp has been designated head coach-in-waiting by the university, expected to take over the Longhorns when coach Mack Brown retires. Muschamp is in his first year with Texas, but athletic director DeLoss Dodds said Tuesday he and Brown know they want to keep him at Texas. To do that, they will more than double his salary from $425,000 to $900,000 in January. He will remain defensive coordinator.
• Minnesota wide receiver Eric Decker is expected to return to the lineup this week against Iowa. Decker missed the last game at Wisconsin and was limited to a handful of plays the previous week against Michigan because of an ankle injury suffered in the game against Northwestern on Nov. 1.
• Toledo's new arena football team now has a name that's nothing to croak at. They'll be called the Toledo Bullfrogs. The name draws on Toledo's history when much of the area was part of the Great Black Swamp. The Bullfrogs will begin play in 2010 in the arenafootball2 league at a new arena being built in downtown Toledo.
Other: Owens award winners named
• USA Track & Field has selected Olympic gold medalists Bryan Clay and Stephanie Brown Trafton for the Jesse Owens Awards as the sport's top American athletes in 2008. Clay was the Olympic champion in the decathlon, posting the two highest scores in the world this year at the Trials and at the Games in Beijing. Brown Trafton was the first American woman to win the gold medal in the Olympics in the discus since 1932.
• Former U.S. pairs champions Brooke Castile and Ben Okolski withdrew from the Cup of Russia, the second Grand Prix event they've missed because of her heel injury.
