The University of Akron concluded the Legends Classic with an 85-41 victory over host Fairleigh Dickinson Sunday night at Stratis Arena in Teaneck, N.J.
The Zips (4-2) finished 2-2 in the Classic, with two wins by 44 points. The Knights are 0-5.
''I thought we played with really good intensity early,'' Zips coach Keith Dambrot told WARF's Steve French and Joe Dunn during a radio interview after Sunday's game.
UA held a 42-23 lead at halftime and was never seriously challenged in the second half.
Zips senior forward Nate Linhart matched a collegiate career high with 19 points. Linhart also had seven rebounds.
UA held an advantage in rebounds (42-31) and assists (20-4).
''We battled,'' Dambrot said. ''We still had issues on the boards, but at least we tried. I thought we shared the ball well. We had 20 assists on 32 made baskets.''
Zips freshman guard Anthony ''Humpty'' Hitchens and sophomore forward Brett McKnight scored 12 points.
Junior Darryl Roberts (six points, four assists), sophomore Steve McNees (nine points) and freshmen Ronnie Steward (five points and four assists) and Eric Coblentz (five points) were key guards in the Zips' attack.
Coblentz is a Lake High School graduate.
Senior Jimmy Conyers (six points, seven rebounds) and junior Chris McKnight (five points) were solid for the Zips.
UA made 32-of-68 shots from the field. FDU made just 10-of-44 shots.
The Zips converted 10-of-22 three-point attempts and 20-of-27 free-throw attempts.
''Right now we are very average, but we have guys that will continue to get better and better,'' Dambrot said. ''We are going to win. We have to keep plugging away.''
