Interim post leads to 5-year contract

Clemson is sticking with Dabo Swinney, giving the Tigers' interim coach a five-year contract Monday to replace former boss Tommy Bowden.
Swinney's salary and possible incentives in the deal won't be released until the contract is approved by the university.
Athletic director Terry Don Phillips said Swinney was one of college football's bright young coaches and he was proud to lock him up for the long term.
''He took over a very difficult situation for the last six games and showed me what type of coach and leader he is,'' Phillips said. ''I was impressed by the way the team responded to his leadership.''
Swinney, 39, took over as interim coach Oct. 13 when Bowden resigned.
The Tigers won four of their final five games under Swinney to become bowl eligible. The clincher came Saturday, when Clemson defeated rival South Carolina 31-14.

• Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell is recovering from surgery to repair nine breaks in two fingers of his nonthrowing hand, but he won't miss any playing time. Harrell, the nation's leading passer, is a contender for the Heisman Trophy.
• The Penn State senior who plays the Nittany Lion mascot was arrested on a DUI charge and his status for the Rose Bowl is in doubt, police said.
• Missouri football coach Gary Pinkel confirmed that his offensive coordinator, Dave Christensen, would take the head coaching job at Wyoming, which was vacated when Joe Glenn was fired Nov. 23 after four losing seasons in six years.
MLB: Sabathia is offered arbitration
• C.C. Sabathia, who is likely to command the largest contract among this year's free-agent pitchers, was offered salary arbitration by the Milwaukee Brewers. If a club offers arbitration to a top free agent and he then signs with another club, his former team receives extra picks in June's amateur draft as compensation. Milwaukee also offered arbitration to pitchers Ben Sheets and Brian Shouse.
• The New York Yankees declined salary arbitration with all eight of their former players who became free agents, a group that includes pitcher Andy Pettitte and right fielder Bobby Abreu.
• Mike Hampton is to return to the Houston Astros, reaching a preliminary agreement on a $2 million, one-year contract. His deal would contain an additional $2 million in performance bonuses, a person familiar with the agreement said.
• The Boston Red Sox and Japanese pitcher Junichi Tazawa have agreed to a major league contract, according to two newspaper reports. The 22-year-old right-hander, who has never played professional baseball, agreed to a deal worth about $3 million, the Boston Globe reported.
NHL: Hockey all-star dies at 64
• Hubert ''Pit'' Martin, a four-time NHL All-Star in the 1960s and '70s, has died after his snowmobile plunged into an icy lake, Quebec provincial police said. Martin, 64, played 1,101 NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Blackhawks and Vancouver Canucks, amassing 809 points from 1963 to 1979.
Cycling: Armstrong to ride in Tour
• Lance Armstrong will ride in the 2009 Tour de France, marking the first time he will compete in that race and the Giro d'Italia in the same year. The Giro runs May 9-31, and the Tour begins July 4.
• Italian cyclist Marta Bastianelli appealed to sport's highest court to overturn her one-year doping ban for testing positive for a stimulant.
Other: WNBA to disband Houston team
• The WNBA president says the franchise that won the league's first four championships is disbanding. Donna Orender said the league-owned Houston Comets would be shut down because new owners couldn't be found.
• Scott Speed will race full time next season in NASCAR's elite Sprint Cup Series, a move anticipated since Red Bull Racing released AJ Allmendinger to make room for the former Formula One driver.
• Ownership of reigning Horse of the Year Curlin remained divided after a judge's surprise ruling rejecting a proposed sale that would have consolidated control of the horse under winemaker Jess Jackson.
• The city of Surprise, Ariz., will host the 2009 Fed Cup tennis quarterfinal between the United States and Argentina on Feb. 7-8.
