UA freshman guard out with leg injury

By Tom Gaffney
Beacon Journal sports writer

Ronnie Steward, a substitute guard for the University of Akron basketball team, will be out about a month with a medical condition known as compartment syndrome.

Steward, a redshirt freshman, has had surgery on his right leg for the condition. Compartment syndrome is an affliction in which increased pressure within a confined space impairs blood supply and could lead to nerve damage if not treated properly.

He started the first three games but has given way to freshman Anthony ''Humpty'' Hitchens in the starting lineup for the past three games. Steward is averaging 3.3 points.

Steward, a Columbus Eastmoor Academy graduate, missed all of last season with a hip flexor.

Zips coach Keith Dambrot said he expects Steward back for the Mid-American Conference season, which opens Jan. 10 at Miami.
