Two local girls basketball players will continue their academic and athletic careers at Ashland University.
Beth Mantkowski and Jessica Bridenthal each recently signed national letters of intent to play for the Eagles.
Mantkowski, a 6-foot-2 center from Copley High, averaged about 16 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks last season. She was first team All-Suburban League as a sophomore and junior, a special mention All-Ohio selection as a junior and a second team All-Suburban League pick as a freshman.
''We are very excited about Beth being an AU Eagle,'' Ashland coach Sue Ramsey said. ''She runs the floor well, has great hands, rebounds at both ends and can put the ball in the basket on a consistent basis. At 6-2, she will be tough to defend. Beth is also an excellent student.''
Bridenthal, a 6-foot-1 forward-center from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, averaged 10.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per game last season.
''Jessie loves the game of basketball and has a great deal of fun playing it,'' Ramsey said. ''Her enthusiasm is contagious, and Jessie is a great rebounder and a dominate presence inside. She will be a force to contend with at the post position. Jessie is a great addition to our program both on the court and in the classroom.''
