Tar Heels are No. 1 in college basketball

Buckeyes move up to No. 21 in poll

Associated Press

North Carolina remains a unanimous No. 1 choice in the Associated Press college basketball poll after its 35-point win over a ranked team. Ohio State moved into the Top 25 on Monday following a pair of five-point victories over ranked teams. The Tar Heels dismantled Michigan State 98-63 at Ford Field last week and again received all 72 first-place votes from the national media panel. Connecticut and Pittsburgh held the second and third spots. Gonzaga and Oklahoma moved up one place to fourth and fifth. Ohio State beat Miami and Notre Dame last week and moved in at No. 21. This is the Buckeyes' first ranking since being No. 1 in the final poll of the 2006-07 season. Defending national champion Kansas returned to the poll at No. 25.

College football: New coaches named

Steve Sarkisian has been introduced as the new football coach at Washington, replacing Tyrone Willingham. Washington is the first Pac-10 team to finish with an 0-12 record after a season-ending loss to California. Willingham was 11-37 in his four seasons with the Huskies.

• Illinois offensive coordinator Mike Locksley, 38, is the new coach at New Mexico. He replaces Rocky Long, who resigned last month after 11 seasons in New Mexico. The Lobos finished 4-8 overall, 2-6 in the Mountain West Conference.

Al Groh will be back for a ninth season as the football coach at Virginia, but his son Mike, offensive coordinator for the past three seasons, resigned in a shakeup. Defensive backs coach Steve Bernstein will retire. Defensive line coach Levern Belin will pursue other opportunities.

Golf: Azinger won't be Ryder captain

Paul Azinger will not return as U.S. captain in the Ryder Cup after leading the Americans to their only victory this decade. The PGA of America will announce the new captain, possibly Corey Pavin, on Thursday. American players lobbied for Azinger to return as captain in 2010 when the Ryder Cup is played in Wales. ''It ain't gonna be me,'' Azinger said Monday. ''I am not the captain.''

WNBA: Ex-Houston players drafted

Sancho Lytle was the first player chosen in the WNBA's dispersal draft of Houston Comets players Monday, going to the last-place Atlanta Dream. The Washington Mystics chose Matee Ajavon with the second pick and the Chicago Sky took Mistie Williams with the third selection. The Houston franchise, which won the first four WNBA championships, disbanded last week.

More basketball: Global title planned

A world championship for basketball clubs will be launched in October 2010. World governing body FIBA said Monday in Geneva that its first event will offer a $1 million prize. The contest will feature eight teams, including the five FIBA continental champions. It won't have an NBA team.

Winter sports: Skater to miss season

Cindy Klassen, 29, who won five speedskating medals at the 2006 Olympics, will sit out the season to give her knees more time to heal. The Canadian had arthroscopic surgery July 8.

• Snowboarding World Cup champion Benjamin Karl, 23, of Austria, will miss at least six weeks with a foot injury. Karl fractured his navicular bone and an ankle bone when he fell in a cross-country training run Sunday.

Other: Gymnastics chairman named

• Olympic gold medalist Peter Vidmar was elected chairman of the USA Gymnastics board of directors Monday in Indianapolis, and will be joined by 1984 champ Mary Lou Retton.

• D.C. United forward Jaime Moreno is recovering from surgery for a sports hernia. Moreno, MLS' career scoring leader with 122 goals, had the operation Saturday in Munich.
