No. 19 Georgetown slaps Savannah State

Smothering first half leads to an easy victory

Associated Press

DaJuan Summers, Jessie Sapp and Austin Freeman all had 14 points and Greg Monroe added 13 as No. 19 Georgetown romped over Savannah State 100-38 on Monday night.

Georgetown (6-1) was simply dominant. The Hoyas shot 69.8 percent from the field (37-of-53) and held Savannah State (5-4) to 22.8 percent (13-of-57). The Tigers have lost four of five.

Two days after holding American University to 12 points in the first half, the Hoyas continued their first-half invincibility, leading Savannah State 57-15.

A 3-pointer by Savannah State's Raye Bailey at the buzzer prevented Georgetown from holding two consecutive opponents to 12 first-half points.

Bailey led the Tigers with 14 points.

Unfortunately for Savannah State, things didn't get better in the second half.

Despite beginning the half with consecutive 3-pointers by Anthony Jones and Bailey to cut Georgetown's lead to 57-21, the Hoyas quickly resumed the pounding. The largest lead was 100-36 with 47 seconds to play.

The Tigers are coached by Horace Broadnax, a Georgetown guard in the mid-1980s. They barely resembled the team that lost by two points in overtime Nov. 29 at Michigan.

No. 9 Louisville 78, Lamar 56 — Even a case of tired legs wasn't going to stop No. 9 Louisville.

Freshman Samardo Samuels scored 15 points and Earl Clark added six points, six rebounds and five assists to lead the Cardinals over Lamar on in the final game of the Marques Maybin Classic in Louisville, Ky.

Louisville (5-1) won its third game in three days by outlasting Lamar, though it made the Cardinals work for it.

Louisville had won its previous two games in the round-robin tournament by a combined 75 points. Things weren't quite so easy against Lamar, which hung around until late in the second half before Samuels and Clark — the event's MVP — helped Louisville pull away.

Jay Brown had 16 points and eight rebounds and Kenny Dawkins added 14 points for Lamar (6-3).
