Richardson, Davis skate to U.S. titles

Ex-inline skater surprises herself

Associated Press

Heather Richardson and Shani Davis won their first sprint national titles Tuesday, the final day of the U.S. Long Track Speedskating National Championships in West Allis, Wis.

Richardson of High Point, N.C., repeated Monday's sweep in the 500- and 1,000-meter races at Pettit National Ice Center.

The four-day competition determined national championships and slots on the U.S. winter World Cup team. The trials to decide the U.S. team for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics will be at this site in October.

Richardson won the 1,000 in 1 minute 18.39 seconds, one-tenth of a second faster than Monday's time. She took the 500 in 39.54 after turning in a faster time of 39.36 a day earlier. She also won the 1,500 in the all-around Sunday.

Davis of Chicago swept the men's 1,000 and was second in the 500 both days.

Richardson switched to ice just 15 months ago after nine years of inline skating. She hadn't counted on turning in her best performance.

''I didn't expect it,'' she said. ''I think that made it a little bit easier, too, because I didn't have that much pressure.''

She finished with 157.08 overall sprint points to beat two far more experienced speedskaters. Two-time Olympian Elli Ochowicz was second with 158.005. Coming back from a stomach virus and using new blades, three-time Olympian Jennifer Rodriguez was third with 159.995.

Tucker Fredricks, of Salt Lake City, who trailed only Davis with 142.380 points, said Richardson made ''a giant leap.''

''She's up there with the best girls,'' he said.

Davis, ranked No. 1 in the World Cup standings in the 1,000, won in 1:09.20 on Monday and 1:09.64 on Tuesday.

''I've won the all-around one six times in a row, but I've never won the overall sprint one,'' he said after earning it with 140.740 points. ''It's better now than never, so I'll accept that I'm happy about it.''

Nick Pearson of Park City, Utah, took third with 143.190.

Football: Marve leaves Miami

• Quarterback Robert Marve is leaving Miami, ending weeks of speculation about his future and adding to the tumultuous start of the Hurricanes' offseason. Marve started 11 of 13 games for the Hurricanes, but also served a pair of suspensions in unrelated incidents, including one that kept him out of the Emerald Bowl. He told the Associated Press on Tuesday that he asked coach Randy Shannon for his release from the program, and hours later, the school announced that Marve was leaving. ''I had to get out,'' Marve told the AP from his family's home in Tampa. ''I just decided that I can't play for coach Shannon.'' The release comes with conditions that don't sit well with Marve. He can't play for teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Southeastern Conference or the state of Florida. It's not unusual for programs to place restrictions on the deal when a marquee player transfers. Marve said he will try to fight to soften the terms of the release.

• UCLA defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker has been hired as New Mexico State's new head coach. NMSU athletic director McKinley Boston announced the hiring Tuesday.

Baseball: Arizona signs Snyder

• Catcher Chris Snyder and the Arizona Diamondbacks reached agreement on a three-year contract. The deal includes a club option for the 2012 season. The 27-year-old Snyder hit .237 this year, setting career highs with 115 games played, 16 home runs and 64 RBI. The homers were a record for a Diamondbacks catcher.

• Right-handed reliever Joe Nelson signed a $1.3 million, one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Rays. Nelson, who agreed to terms last week, was 3-1 with one save in 59 appearances for the Florida Marlins last season. His 2.00 ERA was third-best among NL relievers behind Hong-Chih Kuo's 1.69 and Brad Lidge's 1.95.

• Pitcher Mike Maroth, catcher Michael Barrett and two other players signed minor-league contracts with the Toronto Blue Jays and were invited to spring training. Catcher Raul Chavez and infielder Randy Ruiz also joined the Blue Jays.

Other: Soccer team forming

• U.S. men's soccer coach Bob Bradley has named 25 players to the training camp roster that will begin workouts Jan. 4 at the team's national training center in Carson, Calif. The annual camp features 20 players from professional teams in the United States. MLS teams are well represented, with 10 of 15 clubs contributing players to the Carson camp, including goalie Jon Busch (Chicago), forward Brian Ching (Houston) and defenders Chad Marshall (Columbus) and Sean Franklin (Los Angeles).

Nikita Filatov scored three goals and Russia remained perfect at the world junior hockey championship with an 8-1 win over Slovakia in Ottawa.
