Beckham expresses desire to leave Galaxy

Midfielder wants to stay with Milan

From Beacon Journal wire services

David Beckham wants to leave the Los Angeles Galaxy and stay with AC Milan after his stay with the Italian team ends next month.

The English midfielder announced his intentions Wednesday after playing in Milan's 2-2 tie with the Glasgow Rangers in Glasgow, Scotland. Beckham has played well with the Italian club during his three-month loan, which is up March 8.

''At the moment my lawyers are not talking to the Galaxy,'' Beckham said. ''But I have expressed my desire to stay at AC Milan now, and it's just down to Milan and Galaxy to come to an agreement.''

''I have enjoyed my time here,'' he added. ''I knew I would enjoy it but I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I have and do as well as I have.''

Beckham, 33, is about two years into a $32.5 million, five-year contract with Major League Soccer. The Galaxy had no immediate comment.

Since coming to Italy, Beckham has scored twice and helped to lift Milan to second place in the Serie A standings.

Beckham wants to maintain his place on the England national team and play at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

''To be given the chance again to play at this level at my age is pretty incredible and I've enjoyed it so much I would like to continue it,'' he said. ''I think people have seen the way I've been since playing at this level again.''

''It's nothing against the MLS and the football over there because it's a game that will grow, but it will take quite a few years,'' he added. ''I'm still confident that will happen eventually, but I want to have a chance of being involved in 2010 and I believe my best chance of doing so is to remain here.''

Colleges: Coker interested in coaching

• Former Miami coach Larry Coker has applied to lead the new Texas-San Antonio football program in what would be his first head coaching job since the Hurricanes fired him in 2006. Coker, who led Miami to the BCS championship in 2001 and is currently an ESPN college football analyst, told the San Antonio Express-News he spoke to UTSA over the phone about the job last month. Coker said Athletic Director Lynn Hickey did not indicate if or when he might be interviewed. School officials have said they hope to have a coach in place by March 1, and UTSA hopes to make its college football debut in 2011.

• Former Penn State quarterback Pat Devlin has signed with Delaware, where he'll try to follow Joe Flacco's path to the NFL. Devlin will be able to play immediately and have two years of eligibility left after he spent two seasons as a backup at Penn State. He is a former high school All-American from Downington, Pa. Flacco made a similar choice in 2006, when he transferred to Delaware from Pittsburgh.

Tennis: Ferrer, Baghdatis advance

• Second-seeded David Ferrer and eighth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis eased into the SA Tennis Open quarterfinals with straight-sets victories in Johannesburg. On another rain-interrupted day, Ferrer beat Simon Greul of Germany 6-3, 6-4, conceding only 10 points on serve, and Baghdatis fired 12 aces and didn't lose serve in dispatching local wild-card Raven Klaasen 6-3, 7-5.

• Fresh from her surprising quarterfinal run at the Australian Open, Jelena Dokic led Australia to a 3-0 win over South Korea in the opening round of the Fed Cup Asia-Oceania playoffs in Perth, Australia. Dokic had a 6-0, 6-3 win over Lee Jin-A. Samantha Stosur defeated Lee Ye-ra 6-2, 6-4 and Casey Dellacqua and Rennae Stubbs combined to win the doubles 6-0, 6-2.

Other: Leslie to retire after season

• Three-time WNBA Most Valuable Player and four-time Olympic gold medalist Lisa Leslie will call it quits after her upcoming 12th season with the Los Angeles Sparks to spend more time with her family. Leslie, 36, a cornerstone of the league since its start in 1997, guided the Sparks to WNBA championships in 2001 and 2002.

• The U.S. Olympic Committee is offering Olympic champion Michael Phelps a refresher course in good behavior after a photo surfaced of him smoking from a marijuana pipe. CEO Jim Scherr said he'd like to have a face-to-face meeting with the star of the Beijing Olympics, and spokesman Darryl Seibel said the federation was sending Phelps a letter offering its assistance.

Didier Cuche of Switzerland won the men's super-G at the world championships for his first career gold medal at the age of 34. Cuche, who had not won a race this season, skied the treacherous Face de Bellevarde in 1 minute, 19.41 seconds. Peter Fill of Italy finished second, 0.99 behind, and Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway was third, 1.02 behind in Val d'Isere, France. Defending overall World Cup champion Bode Miller finished 12th.

• Formula One wants to further cost cuts by 2010, with teams running on $64 million budgets. The governing body sent all teams a document proposing regulation changes and a budget decrease that could mean a drop of up to 75 percent for larger manufacturers.
